  • strawberry tree berries

I was wondering if anyone could help me with the carb count of this fruit. I can't seem to find any info.

It's portuguese name is "medronho", in spanish "madroño".

And i can't decide if it is considered a berry or a fruit.

    TIA

    Re: strawberry tree berries

I found a photo of it
And a bit of digging turned this info up
madroño , tree or shrub (Arbutus menziesii) of the family Ericaceae (heath family), native to the Pacific coast of North America and Mexico. It has glossy evergreen leaves, white flowers, and red berries and is cultivated in warm regions for ornament. The bark, which peels off naturally from the trunk to give the tree a naked appearance, has been a source of a brown dye and of tannin, and the hardwood is sometimes used for furniture. A related Mediterranean species, the strawberry tree (A. unedo), also supplies tannin and has edible berries used in preserves, wines, and liqueurs. This genus should not be confused with the plant of the same family whose common name is trailing arbutus. Madroño is classified in the division Magnoliophyta, class Magnoliopsida, order Ericales, family Ericaceae.

        Re: strawberry tree berries

Is there a Spanish or Portuguese Atkins website where you could find an answer? As the plant is a mediterranean one it doesnt seem to exist in the USA or UK so no-one lists a carb count.

Unless someone here knows the non scientific name for it??

A thought struck me - it looks a bit like a lychee on the outside!!

If the inside looks the same maybe you could use the carb count for lychees which fitday.com lists as 5 net carbs (no fibre) for 3 fruits.

I tried to find a pic with leaves to see how they compare

but could only find this small photo.

              Re: strawberry tree berries

No portuguese site that i know of... Atkins is not known here yet. Even if I could find some info it would probably just list calories... . And medronhos aren't commercialized here, people just have them in their backyards, so it makes it more difficult to find info.

And Elizellen such a good idea trying to match it up with another fruit! It is nothing like lychees, it doesn't have seeds, and it is very mushy. The meat in texture, is almost like a very very ripe peach, same color as well. Maybe i'll use that count.

Mean while i'll try spanish sites..

mamakimberly - I looove lychees! they taste so good to me.. but i agree, so carby

              thanks for all your help!
