  • Found 0 Carb Icecream - Dairy Rung

Okay, so I am about to begin the dairy rung of OWL. I will have done a 3 week induction phase and am primarily a veggie eater - so I figured I could probably move through thE VEGGIE rung quickly.

I just found a 0g carbs icecream - CarbSmart Neopolitan. I like icecream - but am more of a crackers/cookies/cake craver - so any ideas if this would be a problem? Or should I avoid....for a while anyway....?? I've allowed myself versions of the mock danish (lemon, raspberry extracts), and a really cool cheesecake for my 'rewards'....but am interested in moving out into the world a little. I planning to start the rung with yogurt, perhaps more sour cream, .....I eat the cheeses, but I never really ever ate from too many of the other dairy options.....sometimes milk.....

That's probably the "net carb" carb count. I'm sure if you read the label, that stuff is sweetened with sugar alcohols or sugar substitutes like polydextrose and glycerin.

You might want to use the search feature at the top navigation bar for 'sugar alcohols' and read those threads. Also you might want to read the sticky thread in the 14 Day Induction Forum called "Addicted to Sugar".

And you might want to reconsider your "reward" system. It's not a good idea to reward oneself with food because that only sustains the bad food habits that contributed to our fatness.

Otherwise, OWL is the time to experiment with different foods to see how your body reacts to them. So if you want to try it out, go ahead. My only caution is that you think carefully about your decision and if the food is "bad" for you (weight loss stops or slows, weight gain, portion control problems, etc.) drop it from your menu immediately.

Yogurt and cottage cheese seem like much healthier options to me, and probably have a lot less additives. But it's your choice. Maybe an occasional snack rather than a regular habit?

Okay, you got me. It's OUT! And, I do have an interesting reward system. Not always food....in fact latetly, it's things like clothing, or running gear. The food rewards come when I am with others and they are having a dessert....so it is my reward to join them, but with a dessert of my own. And I know icecream is pretty big around my group - so I was considering the option....but I shall reconsider.

I have never been able to stomach cottage cheese. Yogurt is on the menu. I actually just started recognizing that I am getting too much cheese, so I am cutting that way back. Also, TOM.....ugh. All the little battles that make this an interesting self experiment.....

        I persevere. Thank you!

Only advice I can give is be careful with the ice cream, and watch your portions.
The last time I did Atkins, I found myself eating more and more of it, more and more frequently.
This time around, I got the Splenda dove bars. They don't really taste that good, but at least it offers portion control.
I've found I like ricotta cheese and cottage cheese a lot better, expecially with a packette of splenda and mixed with either cinnamon or cocoa powder.
I wished I liked yogurt, but I don't. Plus, I don't like that food coloring is added to some, as I'm allergic to red-40.

Re: Found 0 Carb Icecream - Dairy Rung

I actually read a post that mentioned a 'homemade' and induction friendly recipe: heavy cream, flavoring, cream cheese, splenda or saccharin or stevia, cocoa and freeze. I may try that in my later on and wanting icecream moments.

I recently began using Ken's peppercorn ranch dressing on my salads. It contains 1g carb/2T. It tastes fabulous, I tell you - but has anyone else tried it and had any fluctuation problems? It could be TOM, but I'm baubling.
                Any ideas??
