  • Low Carb Ice Cream

Are these acceptable on the Dairy Rung? I've seen people talk of the low carb milk, but did a search and couldn't find whether this was okay or not. I know there is much controversy on sugar alcohols though.

    Thanks!

    Re: Low Carb Ice Cream

It ALWAYS slows me down, and that's because as soon as I buy a box of hand-dips, or a quart of ice cream, I have a serving, EVERY SINGLE DAY until it's gone. I'm sure that if I used these as a once in a while treat, things would be fine - but I just don't have the self control, and have unfortunately learned just to keep them out of my freezer if I'm working hard on slimming down. Only a once in a great while thing.

I tried LC icecream a long time ago. You can't eat much without really upping your carbs. What about your own home made? There may be some great recipes out there. Or can you flavor a yogurt and freeze it??? I've had chocolate soy milk before that had really low carbs and it was really good for a sweet treat. I know that's not dairy, but just thought I'd throw that in there.

I have the exact same issues. What's up with packaging the "diet" stuff in HUGE packaging (1/2 gallon) versus putting the stuff in a "per serving" type container, or heaven forbid, a PINT. In reality, I would PAY MORE for a portion controlled amount!!!

I love how the stuff tastes, and it's really hard to control it! And the worst part is, last time I ate it (when I was on the dairy rung) I felt HORRIBLE the next day--gas, cramping, bloating. Oh my gosh I swore I'd never eat it again, and I haven't. I say, make your own, at least that way it's portion controlled, and there aren't a million sugar alcohols in it.

            Re: Low Carb Ice Cream

This is probably repetative but I did this yesterday.

1 8oz package of softened cream cheese.
2 teaspoons of Hershey's Cocoa (NOT NESTLE QUICK - Real Cocoa)
            2 Tablespoons of Splenda
1 Tablespoons DaVinci SF Vanilla syrup

Whipped it up to the consistency of frosting/icing.

Took some saran wrap, spread it out to about the size of one of those big Hershey Bars...laid it out flat in the freezer, it was a little more than a half inch thick. Froze it. Cut it into 8 portions. About an inch wide.

Only 2 Carbs (a little less actually because of dietary fiber in cocoa)

I couldn't believe it. It tasted like a frozen Jello Brand Pudding Pop!!!!

and...I still have 7 more servings wrapped up in the Freezer.

It was kind of my Celebration dessert for hitting the 75 pound loss point.

It was very nice, and it didn't seem to trigger anything. But I still remained focused on portion control. I entered all the numbers into Fitday for the entire thing and then divided by 8.

            115 Calories
            11.25 Fat
            2 Carbs
            .45 Dietary Fiber
            2.63 Protein

I don't know seemed pretty cool to me. (Cool - ice cream haha - no one gets anything by me...!!!!) As far as those in the store, I tried that several years ago, and couldn't stop eating it, and had the same problems Julie experienced. Not so pleasant. So...I steer clear of it.

Once I hit that dairy rung, I'll be experiementing with smoothies of all different flavors using the dannon carb smart yougurt or greek. More to come!

              Re: Low Carb Ice Cream

Sounds yummy, scooter, thanks! I was having an ice cream meltdown (Ha! See I'm funny too ) yesterday. I seriously miss milk sometimes, and I think watered down heavy cream is disgusting. I did manage to leave the ice cream alone that the ice cream man brought by, even when my 21 month-old's dripped all over me when I was helping her. Not even a lick!

I didn't have any 'issues' like you had, Julie, but that's funny that you say that because my husband did. (He's been doing this with me.) I bet that was why.

I haven't made ice cream yet because she talks about using a food processor, which I don't have :/ I'm not sure if my blender would work? I hadn't thought about freezing some yogurt, though.

Can you drink soy milk on the dairy rung? I assumed it would be up in legumes section (is that a really dumb question?!)

              Thanks guys!

                Re: Low Carb Ice Cream

Soy milk is rung 6 legumes, yes.

I know there's a recipe that uses ziploc baggies and ice, no food processor needed! Let me see if I can find it...

Linda doesn't rate it very high, but I know others have tried it on the board and really liked it.

I know that had to hard, helping the little one with ice cream dripping everywhere. Thats almost like handing the alcoholic the overflowing beer mug and saying 'Hey bud, hold this for me for a few minutes, I'll be right back!'

That which temps us only makes us stronger I suppose! Good for you!!

LOL Thanks! Funny thing is, the beer scenerio would've been harder for me! I actually used to brew the stuff, I love it!

                        Re: Low Carb Ice Cream

As far as store bought frozen desserts goes, i find that buying low carb bars (which i rarely do..but have in the past) seems to be your best bet, since they are portion controlled. Here we have a few different brands, Breyers, Chapmans, and Toffuti. The Toffuti ones I would think may need to wait until the legumes rung, as they are made with soy, but they are amazing! My husband and 15 yr old stepdaugher had them and didn't have a clue they weren't ice cream bars. The Horray Horray and delights are 'tofu' ice cream covered with a hard 'chocolate' coating. They're my favourite!

Here's a link to the nutrional info. The carbs are including sugar alcohols I assume.

                        http://www.tofutti.com/lowcarb.0.asp

They are definately available in the US, the store finder asks for a zip code.
