  • Mr. Pink Needs to Gain Weight

    Hello All.

I'm doing 1 more week of ext induction and then plan to move to OWL, rung 1 and start adding more/new veggies per the book which will probably be about 20 carbs the first day since I average about 15/day now. I have about 15 lbs or so left to lose.

However, hubby, "Mr. Pink" is underweight. He was really light when I met him but after a year of working at McDonalds and eating many, many bags of chicken nuggets/night or big mac/shake/unlimited fry combos 4 nights/week he has gained about 15 lbs. He'd like to gain 20-30 more lbs, ideally as muscle mass. From what I understand he needs to skip induction and head straight for OWL. But where does he start with carb counts? 20? 25? 30? He’ll be in ketosis forever. He must have an upper intake limit of like, infinity. Or is it the quality of the carbs which will help him gain weight?

I have a few reasons for wanting him on Atkins with me.

    1) It’s easier to cook 1 meal for the two of us.

    2) It’s easier not cheating when there aren’t lots of foods that I like that I can’t eat around our house
    3) It's cheaper to buy in bulk for things we'll both eat all the time like eggs, hamburgers, chicken...
    4) I would rather not buy a gazillion extra carb treats for him (bread, cookies, milk, fruit) each week in addition to the additional expense of the meats (and toilet paper) that I'm having now.

    5) I’m afraid he’s going to eat us out of house and home if I allow him to continue to fill up on empty carbs like white rice, white pasta, cake, sugar, cookies, soda, etc and additionally provide him with large meat servings.

For example, we used to have taco night. We’d make 10 taco shells, 1 or more lbs. of hamburger meat, seasoned, with tomatoes, lettuce, Mexican cheese, sour cream and salsa on each filling, no stuffing the tacos. I’d eat 4. He’d eat 6. In addition we’d eat a couple small cupcakes or finish off a pint of ice cream together. That was a filling dinner for me. I might even throw in some beans or chili with cheese (just a small bowl) on the side for substance.

I could eat like 7 taco bell tacos, a large coke, and half a thing of their loaded nachos to give you an idea of how much I used to eat when I ate sugar and carbs. And that was only when I was 10 lbs heavier at 130 lbs.

Now, I can feel satisfied with a taco salad (1 scoop= 1/6 of a lb meat on 1 cup lettuce with an ounce of shredded cheese and a packet of salsa). And maybe a half avocado sliced on the side for a treat. I’m understanding that the appetite suppression is a side effect of my Atkins. If I keep feeding my husband sugar, won't he probably consume the same 1+ pounds of meat plus all his vegetables and a couple of cups of rice for dinner vs

maybe a 1/3 of a lb of meat on a bed of lettuce with a couple ounces of shredded cheese on Atkins? If we work to fill him up with lots of fats and high quality carbs will he be able to self-limit his proteins and feel satisfied?

He doesn’t care whether or not he follows it as long as:

    1) He’s never hungry

    2) He gets to eat as much steak, chicken, hamburger as he needs to be full.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Will Atkins truly help him gain weight, the right kind, so that he gains healthy muscle mass instead of unhealthy Mcdonald’s fat!?? And if so, how does he start his carb count and all that? I thought the point of induction was to help rid the body of toxins and get it used to life without them before starting the diet and then OWL was for finding the carb limit by slowly going up from 20 each week or two.

Thanks for any and all responses… I know it’s a bit different situation that normal on the boards!

Will Atkins help him gain weight? Nope. Atkins will either make him lose weight or maintain what he has now.

My suggestion is for Mr. Pink to see a nutritionist who will help him get within the healthy weight range in a healthy manner.

He's at the bottom of his healthy weight range. Since I got no responses I figured this was a lost cause for him! I am going to start him in the maintenance phase at 100+ carbs/day and keep him eating every 3-4 hours. Unfortunately it doesn't seem anyone with the same problem has used these boards. It's just hard cooking for 2 and having illegal food in the house

Re: Mr. Pink Needs to Gain Weight

That's because most people here are trying to lose weight, not gain it. A low carb diet is defined as any diet where the total carbs are below 100-130 grams. Technically, you are in ketosis when you are eating below 100 total carbs. Since ketosis means breaking down fat, you won't gain weight eating low carb.

Interestingly, until the 1980s, the weight problem was being underweight. So the Standard American Diet was devised to help keep people from losing weight; this was especially true during the world wars. If you look closely at those diets, they were high in carbohydrate foods. Unfortunately, they continued with that high carb recommendation far beyond what was needed, so the population continued gaining weight.

You can move him to Maintenance Phase and make sure he has gets complex carbs, like whole grains, starchy veg, etc. included into his diet. But,the best thing for Mr. Pink is to consult a nutritionist who will give advice on how to gain weight healthfully.

Thanx for the info Megs! Our MD isnt concerned and says he'll continue to put on weight through his 20s. My other reason for wanting him on Atkins was to be more healthy...dump the crappy carbs and replace them with healthier carbs. But I'll be sure to keep his carb count up to ensure that he doesn't lose weight!
