      Thanks Losers!

Ok...so maybe someone can explain all this BMR BMI stuff to us. It is a bit confusing. Hey, DISCO...if it ain't broke...don't fix it...right?

Alright....Breakfast consisted of MUP...1 cup pumpkin, 1/2 tsp. of pumpkin pie spice, 1 oz cream cheese and 1 packet of splenda. I'm on my 2nd 16oz bottle of water!

      Over and out!

Ya big LOSER... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I agree it seems low. It's also because you're getting so skinny. You need less and less calories to keep that new little body functioning.

My weight was down a pound this morning, to 195.0. Yay! While it's only a pound, I had creeped back to 202 at some point during the past several weeks of my foodfest. So, I'm very grateful to be in the mid 190s and headed in the right direction. Thanks for the accountability, guys.

          • BMR explanation

            Ok, the BMR thingey.

BMR = Basal Metabolic Rate (how much you burn doing nothing at all)

Takes into account your height, weight, age and gender. (We 30-something sedentary ladies burn less than those darned 22 year old guys.)
For me, at 5ft 7.5 inches, 37 years old, sedentary computer job, my BMR is 1440.

            Harris formula:
Now, assuming I get off my bum to eat, brush teeth, walk to the photocopier, I will burn just a touch more than that 1440. For me, with a mostly sedentary life, I will burn say 1.2 times as many calories, or 1730 calories a day. This is the number of calories I need to eat to maintain my weight moving around minimally. The more you move, the higher the multiplier (moderately active you can eat 1.55 times more, very active it's as high as 1.9)

            Losing Weight:
So if I need 1730 to maintain weight, I need to eat less than that to lose it. I personally have the best luck keeping around 1400 per day. Too low, and your body panics and tries to hang on to what you have.

Remember, as you lose, as you age, and if you exercise, these numbers need to be recalculated periodically.

            Reasonable explanation?

yes, that is my bmr with the benedict added. My average the last month has been 1178 in calories, but I skipped a few days in fitday so I don't know how accurate that is or if they adjust it by how many you've actually recorded.

But I have plenty of days when my calories are hgiher than 2000. My question is: Would a ketogenic diet like ours change the effects? Does anyone know the science of it, is it the body or diet and exercise?

Thanks Adena and TW for clearing that up.

My BMR with the Harris formula is 2039...subtract 500 from that cuz I still want to lose weight and I should eat about 1539 a day. Good to know.

                  Thanks again

Although I thought we weren't supposed to count calories.

Someone on this board wrote - we don't count calories, but that doesn't mean that calories don't count. The fact is, you can even overeat Atkins legal foods - and if you eat enough more than your body burns, you will not lose and you may very well gain.

It seems like on this WOE you can eat more than on a higher carb diet. On Atkins, you have much less appetite to contend with so it feels like more, maybe.

                      One thing to add--

Jen, the ketogenic diet does have a SLIGHT metabolic advantage. Slight, meaning about 200 calories. It takes more energy to use fat for fuel than it does to use glucose, so our bodies use an extra 200 calories a day. In reality, that's not that much.

My BMR is 1600 calories. BUT, since I exercise 6x a week, I multiply that by 1.725 (roughly) and it says my DAILY CALORIC need to maintain my weight is in the vicinity of 2600-2700 calories. I'm not sure what they mean by "hard" exercise/sports (somedays I have lighter workouts) so to be safe I multiply my BMR by 1.55 (moderately active) and come up with 2480. I used to eat at least 2000 calories a day, but lately I've been eating 1700-1900 and have been seeing better results. BUT, now that I've ditched cottage cheese after figuring out it's a culprit, I might be switching back to eating more calories, although since I cut out certain foods it's kind of hard to eat that much anymore.

I did eat fruit today, technically. I had a larabar for breakfast, as those have never upset me in the past. Not a habit I'm going to keep, but it's called "Julie needs to go to the grocery store to buy food." Don't worry, I'm eating veggies for lunch, and I'm planning on a big salad for dinner.

Hey, this is something wierd I've noticed since I've given up the cottage cheese (or when I stopped eating it for brief periods)--my bodily functions increase in frequency and output. To me, this is a good thing. I get nervous if I don't go "potty" every day or every other day. Since I've quit the cottage cheese, it seems like my intestines are cleaning themselves out or something...

I know that's kind of gross, but I just had to share. Perhaps that's part of the reason I'm feeling smaller in the tummy?

Two happy things: Metamucil fiber caps nightly (with or without calcium) and Chinese Slim Tea (to be taken sparingly, like, during TOM when nothing works - Senna based. Actually yummy with HC and splenda).

I am ootching back to rung 1 or 2ish, or really just cutting back on a few things like nuts, and increasing my veggies. More mushrooms, less snacking. At 3 months, I am finding these lower rungs much easier to stick to than I did the first time around. I notice much less interest in things like sugar free jello and pork rinds. I realized that I had been eating them out of habit, rather than actual hunger.

So stepping back, just a touch.

Julie, cheese is known to constipate. Veggies are known for fiber. So, if you cut back on the cheese and increased the fiber, you will become more regular. I did. I went from 2 x per week to almost daily or every other day again. just since i made the changes in my diet.
