  • Question and confession

I started OWL last week and I've had no problem upping my veggie carbs and feel like I'm doing pretty good. Have stayed in trace to small ketosis. On Wednesday I made grilled eggplant. On Thursday I was up .5 lb. On Friday, I finished the eggplant (two small slices) and on Saturday I was up 1 lb. and out of ketosis! Eggplant! Who would have thought it! And I just purchased a couple for Dana Carpender's eggplant parmesean!!

Saturday I went to a wonderful Kentucky Derby party at my very active 92 year old neighbor's house. She's from Louisville and is a wonderful hostess, serving ham, grits with cheese, what looked like pears and pineapple in a brown sugar glaze, chicken in gravy to go over wonderful looking biscuits, carrots and (gasp!!) home made pecan pie with vanilla ice cream!!

Of course, there was also a full open bar and mint julipps!

Since I had eaten BEFORE I went, I had only the ham - uh, and a couple drinks !

When I got home, I had some roasted chicken, spinach and green beans. I had my requisite number of veggie carbs for the day and also my 100 oz. of water, but was totally out of ketosis and truly expected a gain this a.m.

Well, was I surprised to wake up, still at the weight I was after consuming the eggplant, and in moderate ketosis!

So eggplant is bad for me and, although it will have to be another VERY special occasion for me to have a drink, gin apparently isn't!

    Re: Question and confession

I'm afraid I'll have to rain on the parade...

The ketone bodies your sticks registered may have come from alcohol and not from breaking down fat. Ketostix react to acetoacetic acid, which is one of the three types of ketones. Acetoacetic acid can be derived from the alcohol you had or from metabolizing fat. If you had alcohol, some/all of it probably came from there.

By the way, the color on the ketostix really doesn't matter. If the color changes, you're in ketosis. Things like water intake, exercise, time of testing, etc. will affect how pink/purple your stick gets.

An intolerance to eggplant may cause your body to retain water.

Ah, Georgiana, rain's O.K., in fact your knowledge, and willingness to share it, is one of the reasons I love ADBB! I was just doing a little chain yank!! I know that alcohol burns first and that I didn't get away with anything (sigh!) But I was surprised about the eggplant - just goes to show you how smart Dr. Atkins was regarding food allergies!

      Thanks for the reality check!

        Re: Question and confession

Jeannette, as Georgiana said the eggplant causes water retention but that doesn't mean it threw you out of ketosis. You might just be holding onto some water for a couple of days and then will get a whoosh. If you like eggplant I wouldnt give up eating it yet. (I always have a slow down when I eat it but the scale makes up for it sonner or later),

I feel and lose like I am in ketosis but many times the sticks don't register the ketones. Could be the water dilutes them so they arent readable. I dont know, but don't count too much on the stix. They are not reliable, just a vague guide.

Glad you were able to resist those goodies. That would have been a 50 to 1 longshot for me! LOL
