  • I am so confused...

I'm on week five of the Atkins lifestyle- I lived on Atkins for years so I really do have the hang of things. (lost 80 pounds in 2003, stayed on atkins and kept it off for a long time but gained back 60 when I stopped- I hate myself for stopping..)
On induction I lost 15 pounds- whoohoo...after induction I raised my carbs by 5 and decided to stay there for a while- (so basically I'm at 25 carbs a day for the past three-ish weeks)...I didn't weigh myself for those weeks, just decided I feel great and the longer I wait the happier Id be with the loss on the scale..well.....I weighed in today and Ive *gained 3 pounds. (and *no inches lost)
This did not happen to me last time- and its making me really sad. I drink my water, I eat how I know to eat- and I even expected a stall, but I did not expect to gain weight.
Anyone else have this happen? I don't want to give up- but I sure wish I could figure out how this happened.

Comparing to last time is a waste of effort ... this is now ... this is what you have to deal with.

    Is your period a factor?

If you want to post a menu, with quantities and net carbs, we can take a look.

Also ... weight loss isn't linear ... there's always going to be ups and downs.

      Re: I am so confused...

what did you add as you additional carbs? since that was your only change if you follow Dr Atkins advice you would remove them and see how that effects your scale weight loss. Maybe you are not tolerating the new induction veggies and/or nuts you added when you upped your carbs.

what are you doing as your exercise part of your atkins. did you up the intensity resently? that could cause a scale weight gain.

did you see your doc before you started for blood work and such to rule out any medical reasons for any of that weight gain like hypothyroid? remeber it is 6 yrs later and you are not the same person you were metabolically so rsults will be different.

Remeber also that weight loss isn't a linear thing. you are going to have down days flat dasy and even a few up days but the overall trend will be downward so hang in there.

It will be different this time. Don't get sad - it is a long journey and you will lose again just give it some time

Do you want to share your menu? Sometimes (actually almost every time) second timers tend to let some bad habits sneak in.

Thanks for the replies. I considered my diet, but because I lost the 15 pounds I figured my "old habits" still worked! I added more salad/greens for the extra five carbs- I really hate to take them back off, eating less than 25 carbs indefinitely makes me uncomfortable. I eat a pretty basic diet, very rarely any splenda- I do have coffee in the am...mostly its tuna, chicken, eggs, turkey bacon, and veggies- pretty much all I eat. I have to try to get up to 25 carbs, my habits tend to keep me low. I cant think of one thing I am doing wrong. (I did have a very yummy steak at Longhorn last weekend, bacon crusted, mmmm meat covered in meat, you cant beat it.)
I dont have a period- due to surgery- and have been to my DR. But now that I am thinking about that- the surgery itself could be the reason I'm reacting differently(read: losing slower lol) this time?! Hmmm, that would suck, but its possible. It kicked me into menopause- which isn't fair at my age if you ask me, So now I get to deal with problems losing weight too? Awe.some. grrr
          Im not giving up- I feel great and its just food- but I really wasn't prepared to GAIN! {stomps feet}

            Hey there,

Menopause can surely slow you down.

That yummy steak, I bet ya part of that "yummy" was tons of salt hidden in the seasonings and maybe even some sugar. I had a steak a while back that was so heavily seasoned I literally gained 5# of water the next day, and it took 3-4 days to break even again, and I swelled up like crazy from the salt. ( I have since learned to tell them no seasonings at that restaurant, and the steak is great without it.)

And don't look at it as one day, or one week, or even 1 month of weight loss, this is long term. If I got upset over ups and downs on the scale when I started, I would have given up long ago! You will lose and you WILL GAIN, but it all works out in the long run.

Hang in there, drink your water, and exercise!

Your rewards may be fast or slow, but you will get there!

Did you check FitDay to see if you increased your sodium intake in the past week?

Did you check the ingredients in the turkey bacon? Most bacon is cured with some sugar...not really sure how turkey bacon is made, but most highly-processed foods have a lot of sugar in them.

fitday.com is a great way to monitor your food intake - to make sure you get enough fat, etc. I used it heavily when I first started, and when I move up rungs, I use it for a few weeks to keep tabs on how I am doing with the new foods or extra carbs. It is a lot of extra work, but really useful when trying to troubleshoot an issue.

I tried fitday for my induction- I cant seem to update it, I don't have the time! SALT may be another reason too. Thanks again!

I plan my menus and enter them in FitDay during the weekend.

Fitday takes some time but is great for when you want to trouble shoot a bit.

And you are so totally correct that surgery will have impacted your body. Every little cell is connected (and sometimes I think they conspire) so just be patient with yourself. Your menu is looking very good.
