  • What is the fascination with Girl Scout Cookies???

OMGosh, I think my whole town has been inundated with these evil things. My husband just yesterday was given a CASE of cookies as a birthday gift. Ugh. I don't really miss them but oh my how everyone I know is buying case after case of these! I cannot believe it. It almost seems like this year alone we are supporting the girl scouts single-handed as a small town! I just shake my head but am I just imagining this? Is there really that many more cookies being sold this year? Wow. Of course in years past, I would have a few but this year I don't want any. Not one. In fact its sort of disgusting to me at this point. I just can't believe this - its like a human requirement this year! Not that I am discouraging the Girl Scouts as an organization but wow. Talk about encouraging free sugar loading on a rampant basis. It never occurred to me how bad this is! Am I the only one feeling like this about these cookies?

OMG! If I see them walking up to my door,
I am going to have to hide!

There are 2 sweet little girls who come over here every year to take my order for GS cookies, and I always buy just because they are neighbors, and they are great kids, and I have known them since they were born...but this year...no one is here to eat them...the kids moved out, and it just isn't right to buy them and throw them away, and there are certain things I can not keep in the house...Peanut Butter is one, and GS cookies could be in that category as well. I sure do not want to test myself to find out!!!
I could say NO, thanks, this year, but their little faces will look so sad.
I could buy a box or two, and tell the girls to keep them...and never even bring them back here when they are delivered???

What is strange, over the years, they do not even taste the same any more, but it is like a tradition/addiction. I remember GS cookies being in our house when I was just a little girl. Probably gr K or 1st gr.

HA!!! I totally understand. My evil "I sell everything besides monkey dung" co-worker has about 50 boxes (no exaggeration) sitting here in the office for people to pick up from here.

They are all camped out around the doors of wal-mart too and of course they send the sweetest, pudgiest, rosey cheek, pig-tail wearing one over to say "Would you like to buy some girl scout cookies"? (Insert sappy grin here) lol...hahahahahaha....

Strangely, they are not calling my name....but still. It is an American past time to indulge in GSC.....they are a huge part of our nation. sigh.

Re: What is the fascination with Girl Scout Cookies???

I think you're right, they are a part of our nation but then again lately so is obesity. *Sigh* I have no idea what to do! Luckily even though there is a case of those coconut cookies in my house, they are my husband's so he religiously counts them and if I touch them, it's like an old school teacher ready to smack me on the knuckles with a ruler. Lol. Fine with me! I am happy not to have any - besides, thin mints were my weakness before. Not so much anymore. Besides if I am that desperate I know lots of Atkins recipes (like truffles!) that I can make from the book and indulge myself occasionally but I luckily no longer have the need to sit and devour an entire box of something anymore. I am so grateful for that, I am not messing with it lol.

Of course I have trained myself over the last 2-3 years of dieting (the lowfat/lowcal way) to stay away from trigger foods but now its not such a battle because for one, I am aware of what my trigger foods are, and two, I have that depressed appetite going for me this time thanks to Atkins. I just have never seen such a complete onslaught of cookies this time of year before! I have never seen people buying actual cases of these things. I had always bought one or two boxes, stuck them in the freezer and dipped into them every so often or stuck one or two in with a bowl of ice cream or something but a CASE or several cases??? I just can't fathom it. I guess that's just the state of our country...its kinda sad.

Another weird thing: I went to McDonald's today to accompany my husband for lunch and ordered an iced coffee w/sugar free vanilla. I had to double-check with the girl at the counter that she got that it was sugar free (her first repeat back of the order just said "vanilla") She said oh, sorry and corrected it. Then when she went back to make it, I watched to see what syrup she put in it. Is it bad that I am freaked that last time I ordered this they gave me the sugary stuff?? Why don't they care to get it right? What if I was diabetic??? Gosh, no one cares about sugar anymore and that's sad. I did love that when I visited Houston in December I noticed that they had diet Dr. Pepper everywhere (which I believe is sweetened with aspartame, but it hasn't caused me problems, but I know I shouldn't have it) but since it is my favorite soda, I was surprised. Here where I live (Nevada) you can't find anything but diet Coke or sometimes diet Pepsi at any soda fountain or restaurant. I was so excited to see it lol. Perhaps some areas of the country are more progressive than others!

I just wish it was easier to find low or sugar free options more mainstream but its a work in progress. I have faith that someday our country and government will wake up and stop promoting the low fat way of eating that is just fattening us up more and more! Just makes me want to go visit France and Italy even more...less pressure to eat sugary everything. We are soda and sugar society.

I haven't been tempted or bought the GS cookies for years. They taste so awful! Too bad as they used to be good years ago.

We don't have door to door cookie sales around here; rather, the girls set up a table near the entrance/exit doors at local grocery stores. They're pretty aggressive with their selling too and I was approached by several scouts, boxes in hand. I looked at the ingredients of several cookies and come on folks, no wonder they taste so bad. Chemicals, sugar and soy. Ugh! And I pointed this out to the girls telling them that I don't buy such products and maybe they could suggest to someone to bake better quality products.

The scout leader was not amused. Too bad; they are junk and taste terrible.

Is there an option to donate money to their cause instead?

If not I would do the same as Mizski and tell them that they contain ingredients that I do not eat so regretfully I will have to pass.

I don't think the kids go door to door much here anymore, they rely on relatives and parent's place of business to sell, but I guess if you are friends, or a close neighbor, they feel you will be upset if they did not give you the opportunity to buy the cookies! LOL . And in my past life, I welcomed the door bell ringing and seeing their little faces and the order form in their hands!!!.

scout cookies are the number one cookies sold in america. they are also the biggest source of money for troops, districts, and councils.

Buy all the cookies you normally do BUT immediately donate them back to the seller! Now you are still helping support the cause but you have just doubled your support for them and you don't have to open a single box and hear them calling your name.

That's a great idea! My husband had a tray of them sitting on the coffee table last night...offered me one. Grrrrr. I said no thank you. I *almost* caved after an hour of it. Finally I snacked on legal snacks and thought, hey, I am not hungry for it anymore. Whew...dodged that bullet but then this morning, the same tray of cookies, sitting on the top shelf of the fridge! Still didn't eat any, but I can't wait for these things to be GONE. Too bad hubby is such a brat about it all...he loves to flaunt them in my face, say I am going to DIE eating this way and then how thin he stays eating his cookies (he doesn't, he's gained a couple of sizes this last year so he's solidly in denial). I just have to shake my head and laugh at him. I actually feel sort of sorry for him at this point. I don't have to be company to his misery!

Yeah and if that didn't work (and they were still bugging me) I tell them I and my entire family and network of friends are all diabetic, sorry! Lol. That's actually my line lately, if someone is insisting on feeding me sugar, I will tell them, I have blood sugar issues, I cannot have it or I get very ill. Usually they back off after that. My girl was gs - I have had my share and sold my share
People do buy large quantities of those things. I think it is one of those things where the fact that you are supporting such a worthy case cancells out the fact that the cookies are not a great thing to eat . So people feel pretty good when they have them.

There was a book published a long time ago called the sugar blues where the author compares sugar to heroin. Addictive substance that alters body/brain behaviour. He goes as far to say that he believe that not unlike heroin people do die from sugar consumption.
The stuff does have some power over us for sure.
