  • Newbie question...zero carbs~high blood sugar

Hi. I am new to this board...excited to be a member.

I'm on day 3 of Atkins...I'm in ketosis but my blood sugar is still registering at 325? What is going on?

I do have diabetes, I was on insulin last year for about a month, but I ended up gaining about 20 pounds, so I quit the insulin and lived a lie.

Last weekend, after spotting myself in a mirror in a restraunt and not recognizing myself I finally decided to get healthy. I am eating well below 30 carbs a day but my blood sugar is high. Is this right? My blood sugar meter is new, so I don't think it is to blame...I'm not on any meds that would mess with my blood sugar. I thought only carbs elevated blood sugar...or do I just have so much sugar in me that it will take time to decrease.

Thanks for your help, I look forward to traveling this journey with you all.

    Jana

I just have to remember...one day, one hour, one second, one breath, one heartbeat at a time...I can do this!

Hi :wave Welcome to our ha family :hug
I don't know the answer to your question but am sure someone will be along with some science soon to reassure you.
My DH had been a stage 2 diabetic for 15 years before he started Atkins and now at 73 years old is 'normal' with no symptoms at all.

Have you introduced yourself to the regulars of our diabetes forum?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

You should be eating no more than 20 carbs per day during Induction. Do you have Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002) book? Please read the book so you have a complete understanding of this way of eating.

I don't know about the blood sugar reading, but DANDR has a section on Diabetes.

BTW, welcome! Atkins is perfect for diabetics!

Thanks for the heads up about the diabetes board...I'm all over it.

I do have the book...I've been on Atkins before (a couple years ago with much success...but the carbs overcame me) and found that consuming under 20 carbs a day knocks me out...and I will lose way too fast (which should be a good thing, but I have zero energy). I am in heavy ketosis right now consuming between 20-29 carbs.

        Thanks for your help.

You need to see your Doctor! Your blood sugar is way too high!
Insulin is released to transport the excess glucose to body tissues when your blood sugar level gets too high. You may not be making the insulin you need and you may need to get back on medications. Any time your Blood sugar is high damage is being done to your body. You need to work with your doctor, diet and excersize!

Thank goodness someone said that. Please go see your doctor, get on some meds to regulate your blood sugar, whether it be insulin or something else. Stay with the diet and then work with your doctor to wean yourself off the meds if you can. Damage that may be occuring to your body includes, kidney failure, blindness and loss of limbs. This is not something to mess around with.

I also have been taking blood sugar readings and here they are since Monday when I started the program: 129, 121, 130, 123, 115 and 99. Those have been the most consistent sugar readings that I have had in a long time.

Something is going on with your sugars as I take insulin twice a day..Sure there is not something your eating that is spiking it? Have you posted what you have been eating each day?

Ok, I spoke before I should have. After work I came home and replaced the strips in my meter, did a control test, and by gum when I tested my blood sugar the reading came back as 132.

I should have done that in the first place. Sorry about that...I feel like a dork. Thank you for your help anyway!
