  • Zero Carb Cheese - Is it possible?

I just bought a package of stringable marble mozzarella cheese (stick form), and in the nutrition facts it says for 2 sticks: 120 calories, 8g Fat, 0g Carbohydrates. I bought it at Super Store made by Loblaws in Canada! Is that possible? Anyone else tried this? The cheese is wonderful, but almost too good to be true!!!

it's impossible to be carb free...cheese comes from milk. Not sure about Canada labeling, but here in the US..they can rightfully label anything 0 carbs if it has less than one carb. So if something is .9 carbs...it says 0 on the package.
I would count each cheese stick as 1 to be on the safe side.
Nothing is free food either..so I would limit how many you eat daily anyways!

I would think if the label says 0 carbs for 2 sticks that it must be true. More than likely the 2 sticks don't add up to 1 carb, so they ladeled it this way. But if you eat more than 2 sticks you will probably be consuming Quite a few carbs. IMHO!
Easier to just count 1 stick as 1 carb, then you are OK.

Almost all the cheese I buy says 0 carbs, but I always count it as 1g per ounce, or whatever fitday says for the total amount I enter.

just remember when Dr Atkins created his rules he declared that cheese was 1 carb per ounce so even if you do find a 0 carb cgheese don't abuse it and go wild when you get to OWL rung 2 or the plan will not work for you. most cheddar has .2 carbs per ounce and that is an awful lot for 5 net carbs but Dr Atkins never ment it to be used that way.

Thx 2big. I will definately count at least 1 carb/stick of cheese, and of course be careful not to eat too much of it. I knew it was too good to be true!!!

Re: Zero Carb Cheese - Is it possible?

Where I live the labelling is quite precise - nutrition facts go for 100g and it may be like 0.1g carbs per 100g of product. So I pretty much trust labelling.
And I've still found many cheeses which say 0 g carbs in 100 g cheese... I won't eat more than 100g a day anyway (it's about 4 oz if I'm not mistaken). Especially this 0 carbs goes for for aged hard cheeses - mozzarella still has some crbs, cream cheese e.g. has like 4-5 carbs in 100g and string cheese has carbs too - because the "things" tehy put in there to make it stay strings I think. And all possible flavoured cheeses have carbs - smoked cheeses, garlic, cumin, herb cheeses - they all have carbs on labels. So I pretty much believe it may even be correct to count no carbs if label says no carbs
              Just my opinion.

You can also plug the numbers into a "Hidden Carb Calculator" to see if there are any undeclared carbs in the product.

A quick way to figure it out on your own (in the store before you waste your money on the item) is to do this simple math.

Multiply the fat grams by 9
Multiply the carb grams by 4
Multiply the protein grams by 4

Add up the results and subtract from the total calories listed on the package. If there is a difference, then you can count that as a "hidden" carb.

For example, a product has this nutritional info

                Total calories 120
                fat grams 10
                carb grams 1
                protein grams 3

                10 x 10 = 100
                1 x 4 = 4
                3 x 4 = 12

                100 + 4 + 12 = 116

120 - 116 = 4, so there are 4 unaccounted grams of carbs in that product.

Re: Zero Carb Cheese - Is it possible?

a Megs that is 4 unaccounted for calories or 1 gram of carb.

Moonwish you are missing the point about cheese. When you get ot OWL if you don't count it and the nuts as Dr Atkins wanted them counted (he actually says the carb counts for a serving of nuts that we have all found is in error in the chapter of DANDR on fiber and complex charbohydrates) you will be consuming way more then his plan will handle in calories as Cheddar cheese is really .2 carbs per ounce so if you did 5 net carbs at 25 ounces well you can see what would happen to your weight loss eating that many cals a day too.

                  happy low carbing
