Re: Going to war with my kids' family consumer science teacher....

Count me in on one of the "many Americans" who "ignore the Food Pyramid." And why shouldn't we?

Aside from the feeble digs at the end, it sounds like she is burning her carb-calories BACKPEDALLING!!!!

Good job, Brooke, in keeping your son from getting- or being - a big fat zero. Tell him from all of us we're proud of him, too.

Re: Going to war with my kids' family consumer science teacher....

            THANKS!

Well, she sent me another e-mail. LOL

I'm going to just let this one go mostly unanswered (of course I'll let her know she has my support and apology accepted) and accept that she'll do what she says she's going to do for face value. While I can totally appreciate her position on needing to teach the curriculum, it doesn't mean she gets to speak without thinking or assign things in a manner that might be disrespectful of people's health, beliefs, or homes.

            Dear Ms. W.
I apologize for insuating to Aaron that your family does not care about
or follow healthy nutrition. I will formally apologize to him tomorrow.
Our conversation was brief, there were many things happening in the
classroom, and I wasn't quite sure what he was trying to tell me so I am
sorry for the misunderstanding. I agree that your menus sound very
healthy and am glad to know that you are passionate about your food and
exercise, something that will only have a positive affect on your children.
As a FACS teacher, I do have training and continue to attend workshops
on Nutrition and I am savvy enough to understand the politics behind
the Food Guide Pyramid and to understand the bad rap that certain diets
receive. I need your support of me as a teacher that I do have some
knowledge and to accept my apology for any poor comments that I made.
            --Mrs. L
There's alwasy room for compromise, and I'm glad we found one that will satisfy both of us!

Hurray! My kid doesn't have to eat bread for school! LOLOL!

Phew, glad this has a happy ending!

I'd like to add that I think Aaron needs a big round of applause. Not only did he know enough that the new food pyramid is different than what you're eating at home (really, how many kids pay attention to something like that?), but he also had the bravery to defend you and challenge his teacher on the subject! Man, he is definitely your son!

Wow...I'm very impressed by her last e-mail. Very cool of her to step up like that and apologize in a thoughtful way.

Brook...I know you're barely older than me but will you adopt me? lol!

                    Wait JUST ONE MINUTE here.

WHO said I was old enough to have the kids I do in the first place?!!

Heh. Rhonda, you may be comfy admitting being 3 decades old. Me? I'm going to be 19 with 13 years experience for a VERY long time.

I will DEFINITELY pass props on to my kid. I agree, he deserves them!

Great job brook!! You kick arss!!! I was still kinda POed about her saying that it was a misunderstanding...no you said something wrong, you got called out on it..then you apologized...is it just me or did it seem like ignorance, not a misunderstanding?? Hmmm, so glad that our tax dollars go to teachers who speak before thinking and obviously cannot control there classrooms enough to listen to a student speaking to THEM!! I'm just glad that there are still some wonderful teachers..aka Finelly!!! Where do you teach at, I want my son to be in your class!!! It's nice to know that there are still teachers who actually care about there job! Anyway..did the principle ever reply to your e-mail?

                        Ms. L,

I truly appreciate your apology and it's important to me that you know you have my complete support as one of Aaron's teachers.

Thank you for being willing to listen with an open mind, as well as teach and be taught. I appreciate that we can both pleased with the outcome of this entire situation - Aaron gets his assignment done, you get your curriculum taught, and my family values/decisions are respected and remain in tact

I'm a firm believer that it takes a village to raise a child, and I'm glad you're part of that village.

                        Have a fantastic day.

I forwarded the entire conversation to the principal, but no, he never responded or got involved at all, which is fine by me. Had we been unable to reach a compromise, I'd have been the irritated blonde lady, tapping her foot impatiently while making little effort to look REAL owly standing in his office tomorrow morning. He couldn't have missed me if he tried.

                        heh heh

Re: Going to war with my kids' family consumer science teacher....

Since the thread is titled "Going to war...," here's a quote fron Sun Tzu's Art of War...

"If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every vivtory gained, you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle..."

Apparently, Aaron's teacher, while saying she attends seminars and workshops, knew very little about Atkins and couldn't defend her position.

Aaron will have the benefit of knowing both Atkins and the new USDA food pyramid. He'll be able to say what's wrong with the food pyramid because he understands it.

A lot of people who signed up on these boards haven't read the book and don't have a complete understanding of Atkins. These are the ones who either give up or say Atkins doesn't work or that Atkins isn't for them.

Sorry, but I think her response sounded a wee bit patronizing.
Again from The Art of War...

"The city is small and well fortified; even if I succeed in taking it, it will be no great feat of arms; whereas if I fail, I shall make myself a laughingstock. It is a great mistake to waste men in taking a town when the same expenditure of soldiers will gain a province."

Apparently, the teacher was wise enough to know it was a battle not worth fighting.
