Just wanted to add my 2 cents to this, yes it is possible to lose weight on a calorie deficit alone so you can lose weight without exercise.
The problem with losing weight this way is this, without exercise more of the weight you will lose will come from muscle compared to when you exercise. When lost weight comes from muscle it raised your body fat percentage which makes you appear heavier. So it is important to make sure the weight you lose comes from fat.
A combination of cardio & resistance training has proven to provide the best results along with proper eating.
