  • Is this normal behavior?

Ok, so ive been doing the low carb thing for couple weeks now, (my 3rd week this week). Ive noticed my attitude changing, ive always had a short temper, but WOW...i get mad/frusterated over the easiest things now. I even find myself wonder "WTF did i get mad about that for"

I dont know what is causing this... is it just in my head because im missing caffine/sugars???? (THE GOOD FOOD :d )

Hmmm. Could be a withdrawal thing. I know I was a bit more short tempered when I quit smoking. I think there was some underlying anger and frustration that I couldn't turn to my favourite activity to de-stress me. You may be feeling the same thing about food? Overall though, I find that being on Atkins has evened out any mood swings I was having and I feel much calmer and more able to handle things. I'm sure others will be along to comment on this.

Just the opposite happened to me. I used to get upset and mad at everyone for any little thing.

Once I started Atkins, I started feeling better about myself and didn't put all the emphasis of what others did and said to make me happy. I made myself happy by reading inspirational material and visiting the ADBB. Being around all the happy people here makes me happy. Seeing people lose weight and improve their lives gives me a boost.

I was definitely more short tempered the first fews days while on induction. I don't think it lasted the full 2 weeks, but I'd have to ask my family to be certain, lol. However, I am now much more even tempered and actually I'm usually in a very good mood most of the time. That's a pretty big change for me. For me, I think it was as you say, going through the withdraw from sugar and caffine. No matter what caused it, I can now say in the long run it was well worth it. I feel better than I have in years, both mentally and physcially.

          Re: Is this normal behavior?

Are you using ANY sweeteners? (Including even the somewhat acceptable ones like Splenda?)

I have found that artificial sweeteners play havoc with my mood. Some sweeteners more dramatically than others, but they all do it.

When I first started onto Atkins I found it improved my mood incredibly. But after a while I began adding in "sugar-free" stuff and eventually began having all sorts of mood swings. At first I didn't know why, but over time I began to see the connection. I could be in a perfectly good mood, happy, having a great time, and then eat something with an artificial sweetener. Twenty minutes later - kapow - I would be trapped in an emotional black hole.

I eventually realized I was better off to eat real sugar than artificial. I stopped even trying to do Atkins until I was ready to finally come back and do it with no sweeteners of any kind.

(Oh, and you have to read the Ingredients part of the label to be sure. I've had many people offer me food which they are convinced has no sugar and no artificial sweeteners. Then I look at the label and there it is.

A lot of foods will say "no sugar no nutra sweet." Well they have Splenda. Some say "No Sugar Added," and the label doesn't show any Splenda. But at the end of ingredients list - aspartame. And the most dangerous ones - the "20-minute-countdown-till-I-lose-it" sweeteners - are the sugar alcohols - don't belong on Atkins anyway but they show up in places like protein bars with a big label saying "ONLY 2 CARBS net.")

            Re: Is this normal behavior?

I went through a mourning period in those early months of Atkins. Once the physical addiction was taken care of there was the whole emotional thing to contend with. I had to deal with the fact that I wasn't able to turn to my old friends (sugar, starch and sugar..did I mention sugar?) anymore. I was angry at myself for not having taken control sooner and I was upset to realize I was so emotionally wrapped up in my food when I had staunchly thought I was not an emotional eater.
There were some tense moments around here when I dealt with all of this, but it got better, especially when the pounds started coming off.

It does take a while for 'withdrawal' symptoms to subside.

But it seems to get better as the months go by. Even though I've doing this for 6 months, it seems my health just gets better and better each day!

Betty has a good idea...exercising can really help work-out any stressors you might be dealing with, also, make sure that you are getting enough sleep! Being sleep-deprived can cause you to be grumpy, unfocused, and impatient.

                    Are you on CLA?
When I did Atkins the first time, I simultaneously started taking CLA. I was a raging *itch from the word go, and I later realized - once I ceased taking the supplement - that CLA must disagree with me somehow.

This time around, I am doing a "clean" run - no unnecessary supplements - taking only my daily vitamins - and am happy and cheerful.
