  • What are normal cholesterol numbers for this diet?

I've been on Atkins for over 7 weeks. At 5 weeks, I had some blood tests done, and they checked my cholesterol. They told me the results were fine. They said the low carb diet had lowered my triglycerides. Just wondering how Atkins is supposed to affect my cholesterol numbers.

I did some research on the desired levels, and some of my numbers look good, and some don't.

    My Total Cholesterol: 178
    Desired: <200
    Borderline: 200-239
    High: 240+

    My Triglycerides: 70
    Normal: <150
    Borderline: 150-199
    High: 200-499
    Very High: 500+

    My HDL: 33
    Desirable: >60
    Acceptable: 40-60
    Low: <40

    My LDL: 130
    Optimal: <100
    Near Optimal: 100-129
    Borderline: 130-159
    High: 160-189
    Very High: 190+

My Ratio of Total to HDL: 5.4 to 1
    Good: < 5 to 1
    Better: < 3 to 1

Actually, what's more important is the ratio derived by taking LDL divided by HDL .. in your case that would be a ratio of 3.93.

Check out this link for more info: http://www.fatfreekitchen.com/choles...hdl-ratio.html

You could easily raise that HDL by adding in more cardiovascular exercise.

    Congrats on the good numbers!

yep upping your HDL is one of the things Atkins does with the eating and the exercise program. on your next recheack your HDL should be higher which will lower your LDL and even if your total goes up you will have a healthier lipid profile
