  • Trying out the "Bar" scene

Hey guys... Ok I'm sure I could find the answer to this question if I wasn't so lazy (searching is time consuming ya know! ) But...
I have a really busy week ahead of me so I bought some of those low carb power bars for quick meals/ snacks (I know they're frowned upon. I've never tried them before but they seem so easy). I've read that these bars and low carb candy give you the runs... I don't want the runs. The runs are nasty...
so will just one bar do this or do I have to eat the whole box in one sitting to get my friends knockin'?
    Thanks in advance!

I thought this would be a question about drinking alcohol before I read your post LOL

As to the 'lowcarb' bars, it all depends on how your body reacts to them!! Some people find even half of one will have the bathroom effect.

If you do decide to eat them and risk it, make sure the ingredients are all on the list of foods you are allowed to eat on your Atkins stage - so if you are on induction then you shouldnt eat any with nuts, fruit, soya, wheat flour, etc, etc in them.

Oh - and whatever the label says the sugar alcohols in most of the bars do get absorbed by your body, so dont assume those magical non-counting carb counts are accurate!

The easiest quickest low carb 'power food' is a boiled egg or two btw!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I thought you were going to go bar hopping to see what kind of responce the new skinnier you would get. LOL What kind of bar did you get? I saw a Atkins Peanut Butter Granola Bar the other day it said it didn't have the sugar alcohol. It did list sucralose in the ingredients. It was made of soy chips. Not sure how good it is but might be a better choice rather than the ones with malitol in them. Not only does malitol make me go to the bathroom if I eat too much of it, but even a little bit of it gives me gas the rest of the day.

In San Francisco, there is another entirely different meaning

I bought a bunch of bars at first but then read more about the frankenfoods and how they can be potentially harmful. I will have a bar in a complete emergency (extra long night working & no more alternative good snacks) and haven't noticed any side effects (bathroom, etc) BUt I have tried to tellmyself I will just eat 1/2 or 1/3 of the bar... it never works & I eat the whole thing.

Hey, thanks for the responses guys...

Elizellen ~ I guess you're right, I'll have to see how my body reacts to them. I guess I don't get how the whole sugar alcohol thing works... explain it to me? lol

Choeve - lol, I actually have already gone out to the bar to test the reaction of my smaller self... and I wasn't disapointed. Two guys were trying to hit on me 1/2 the night and my hubby was sitting next to me! lol ... The bars are the Pria Low Carb Power Bars... I got them at Costco today. Thy have like 17g sugar alcohol... suposedly only 2 net carbs though... Not so sure now!

Kjspea - Hum... what does it mean in San Francisco??? Tell Tell!!
I had one of the bars this afternoon and OMG it was sooo yummy. It was the first candy like anything I've had since I started this WOE... I can see how they can be dangerous by eating too many, but shortly after I ate it I got a really yukky taste in my mouth and I just felt icky. It lasted for about 1/2 hour then went away...

I might try them again tomorrow or I might take Elizellen's advise and opt for an egg!

Re: Trying out the "Bar" scene

I've been eating the Atkins bars every once in a while but I'm confused by the car count. On the nutritional information it says it has 23g of carbs, then it states sugars are 0, polydextrose 4, glycerin 13, fiber 0 but on the cover it says it has only 2 net carbs. Anyone know how does that work?

I know you can substract fiber from carbs but can you substract others, like usually labeled just "sugar"?

              thanks ahead if anyone responds

In my experience with those bars I will say this. They totally stall me out. I have lost more weight since putting those and low carb energy drinks down. Plus if I have them laying around I say oh well they are low carb so I can eat another one. I wouldnt even deal with them if I were you, I would rather have a piece of celery with some ranch or blue cheese dressing anyway. Plus they are kinda expensive.

Thanks for those links Elizellen, they really cleared up a lot of my questions about sugar alcohols....
Well after my busy week and having about 2 bars a day I not only had "gas" (no problems w/ my "friends") but I have also gained 5 lbs... not sure if this is a fluke or if it has anything to w/ the bars at all, but What the h***?!? I've also slacked on exercise this week, so maybe thats why I've gained??? ... Over all the bars are very tasty but I think it best I save them for occasional treat!

Adreliluc - which bars did you eat. I know they are frowned upon but I am headed to Disney/Universal for a week at the end of the month and probably will pick up a box as backup food in case I can not find something more suitable. I was thinking of throwing a few cans of the atkins milkshakes in also. Hopefully with all the walking I will be doing during the time I am there it keeps me from stalling over the convenience foods.

Chances are it was the bars. I bought the same kind at Costco (Pria carb select) before I started induction, forgetting that I have -- um -- problems with sugar alcohols. For a couple of weeks I was eating a few a week and I didn't lose anything during those weeks. And they don't even taste that great -- kind of reminded me of that "dry milk" my mom used to mix up. Anway, I started losing again after I cut them out. For now on, anything with sugar alcohol is for DESPERATE moments only!

Yep those are those ones, the pria carb select power bars. I think I'll still have one every now and then - when in need... I was actually shocked to see that I gained weight because I'd been eating soooo much less than usual. My cals were probably under 1000...

I have the atkins bars around for emergency situations. I haven't found them to stall me out, and they taste really good. I will only eat them as a meal replacement though. Not as a snack. They are not part of my eating routine only as an emergency stop gap measure.
