  • Surrendering to the Atkins Program

I know in the 12 steps program, that a step is to surrender to a higher power, or to recognise that the problem is more than just you can handle.

I see with a lot of people (mainly myself) that the weight struggle as been an enormous plight of addiction to foods, emotional upheaval, and struggling self esteem etc.

I know that ADBB cops a lot of flack for being focussed on the 2002 DANDR book. A lot of people are accused of being program NAZIs.

But the reality is, the reason why the program is so adhered to, is I think, that we recognise that we cannot do this alone, or under just our own power.

That we dietary guideance from a program that works.

It doesn't matter what diet plan you choose, the majority of successful losers, succeed because they adhere to the plan.

And anyone who is struggling emotionally, and a lot of self doubt, can go back to this plan and ADBB and find refuge, and the the strength to go on.

I PMd 2big4mysize about something the other day, and in helping me, she directed me to a section in the book. (Thanks 2big btw!)

If I had decided to do my own plan, or make up my own rules along the way, where would I be in this time of crisis?

This is the power of the DANDR program, and we can use the strength of that program to help us when the times are bad, and when we are emotionally down.

    Just thought I would share!

        Well said.
But I must ask...who is doing the flak throwing and accusing stuff?
        That sounds stupid to me.
I mean, the site is exactly for that, Atkins and sticking to the book.

Re: Surrendering to the Atkins Program

            THANKS, DAVE!

I am long-standing hardcore Atkineer and I've taken my share of abuse on other boards for being that way ... mostly from folk who consistently cheat and who have yet to meet their goal after YEARS of (so-called) effort.

The bottom line is, folks, this is a PLAN FOR LIFE...not until you reach your goal, but FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE. If you're not able to commit 100% to that, then you are not ready for Atkins!

Re: Surrendering to the Atkins Program

I am a sugar junkie no doubt about it my friend ..I think sugar is a drug....and should have a sin tax!!! all crapfood should!!!!

yes I eat things once in a while that have sugar in them but even when I am careful and in control I can feel the changes in myself ....the draw for more...

my God I can eat 5 candy bars at one sitting and not even realize I am doing it!!!.....and I have wittnesses that I have done that!!!

I used to think I could just loose weight and be "normal" well ...obviously I will never be "normal" on any level ...but with some foods I know that my body reacts like a junkies body does to heroin...

                  I get a buzz
                  my mouth waters for more
my mind fixates on the offending food until I eat enough of it to go calm
I go into a carb coma
the next day I feel like shiiit but want to eat more off the offending food

sounds like a addict don't you think? ...

I am addicted to Atkins now...I do not think the 12 steps are for me but I understand what you are saying and agree completely ...I will not ever ever ever risk getting fat and miserable again ....it is just not worth it ....

I love the way we eat and think about food here and I am going to continue to put only wonderful fresh well prepared foods in my body ...

I adhere to this way of living because it does wonders for my body and mind ...and I do get to eat the best food in the world to be perfectly honest ...why would I leave a lifestyle that let me loose weight and keep it off by eating butter, cream and cheese? and not have the intense cravings for food that I used to ...I just take great pleasure in preparing and eating wonderful fresh foods for myself and others ...I am still food obsessesed but I am obesessed with good healthy food that keeps me looking and feeling good and healthy ....

                  great thread thanks

Re: Surrendering to the Atkins Program

                    There's a book out called
"The Hungry Years: Confessions of a Food Addict" by William Leith, in which he talks about his carb addiction and how it changes your whole life.
He met Dr. Atkins and then changed his life.
Anyway, he talks about flipping the switch like Heidi said, he can't just have one candy bar, he'll have a bite and before you realise, you've eaten 6 one after the other.
I'm like that too, I don't want one choc thanks, I want the whole box.
Flip, the switch has been flipped.
He eats a teaspoon of creamer...
                    Flip
                    He's eaten the whole jar.
Maybe I'll post this a as a new thread.

Once you get started and find an exercise you enjoy, Dave you will really see the benefits of it!!

When I was losing most of the weight I have lost I only used to walk every few days for exercise, but now I have been going to the gym 3 times a week over the last 3 months I can see a great improvement in my body shape!

I have lost absolutely NO weight yet but did see a whole inch go from both thighs in the first 5 weeks! And my 'shar-pei' wrinkly thighs and buttocks seem to be much less wrinkly too!! (TMI I know )

Now why on earth didnt I start to exercise earlier I might have reached goal and be able to wear a skirtless swimming costume by now if I had
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Thanks, Dave! You are absolutely right. The naysayers who are on this board, but want to do things "their own way" obviously don't appreciate the time and attention Dr. Atkins put into his book. There is a reason why following his program works! And it isn't about controlled cheats and frankenfood now, is it?!?!

                          Big love for posting this!
