I made jalepeno poppers tonight for the second time and had an allergic reaction to cleaning them. I had gloves on and began taking the flesh and seeds out under cold, running water. I started coughing and sneezing. The next thing I know my throat started to swell and had a hard time breathing for a bit. I ran and took some Benadryl. I was fine within minutes of walking away from the peppers. Was I suppose to wear a mask when I work with the peppers or am I allergic? Has this happened to anyone else? I love to eat them, Dang it! I don't think I better have them again though.

Re: Allergic to jalepenos?
I don't think it's an allergy. I do it too. And with cayenne. And with crab boil. Preparation and cooking of those foods clenches my throat.

Re: Allergic to jalepenos?
The oils in the peppers are an irritant to some folks. So, be sure to wear gloves.~Megs~

Re: Allergic to jalepenos?
did it actually swell or did the oils just irritate you?
if you were fine as soon as you walked away then it wasn't allergic reation since those don't stop until treated.by the book atkinseer

Re: Allergic to jalepenos?
I was definately having trouble breathing and my throat felt very tight. It did feel better after I walked away from them. I took the Benadryl just to be safe. When I went back over to the sick to throw them away, I again couldn't breathe. I had my husband throw them away.Michele SW250/CW 226/GW150 F, 38, 5'6"

Re: Allergic to jalepenos?
When my husband cooks with jalapeno's it gives me a coughing fit. But I can eat them just fine.

Re: Allergic to jalepenos?
I have eaten them for years with no problems at all. I have only made them homemade twice. The first time I coughed and sneezed alot, but the second time is when I had the breathing problem. I am never going to make them again. That definately scared me.
