Re: "We only do vegetables on a sunday sir".

    Restaurant people get easily confused.

One time, I was at a Thai Restaurant, and I wanted Chicken and Tofu in my dish, rather than one or the other. They couldn't do it, because the computer didn't have a button for Chicken and Tofu. Grrrrrrrrr

I hear what you are saying girlfriend! (does that sound american enough?)

I went into a chip shop in england a few months back and on the menu was doner meat and chips. I asked if I could just have the doner meat on its own and the boy behind the counter said that I couldnt because he didnt have a button on his till for it!

      Sheesh indeed.

I wonder how the English would like our law here that no liquor (of any kind) can be sold on Sundays. Welcome to the Bible Belt! Never heard of no veggies until Sunday, though!

Ohmygod. You guys really need to eat at different places. I have done horrid things to ordering food/drinks to make it friendly... Then again, I'm the person who orders dinner at TGI Friday's before the waitress gives me a menu since I know the places I can change things at and what I can change.

Nope, and it's not because somebody donated it, either; however, I'll let Rich explain. Although I've been in the kebob (or "kebab") shops and had both them and doners, I'd never be able to tell it, properly.

Also, as a Yank, I have to add that the British "pub grub" is nothing at all like the bar snacks that we have, here. In my past visits to England I had some pretty nice full meals in pubs. Back in the days of high carbs, I once, in a London pub, had bangers and mash in a shell of Yorkshire pudding, which was delicious -- and, not unexpectantly, VERY filling.

Yes that does make sense...I guess a pub would have fewer selections than a restaurant. I kinda thought every place had something for veggies though, but I guess not

It was the "Old Lane" pub in my local town.

Doner meat is wierd really, cant explain it but it looks like an elephants leg going around on a spit in a shop window. Try googling it.

In NY I think they call it GYRO.
In NS and other locations in Canada it's DONAIR

It's often a mixture of lamb and beef, or one or the other, depending on the restaurant, with spices, etc.

There are recipes for you to make it at home, more like a meatloaf, so that you can put a "ball" of meat in a roasting pan and cook it in the oven (if you don't have a spit). Then you slice it and serve it as you wish (original donair would contain sauce (either sweet or tart), chopped tomatoes, chopped onions, served on a pita bread.

I thought a gyro, pronounced "yee-ro" was a Greek sandwich with the type of meat you described wrapped in a thick pita with cucumber sauce, tomato, feta, etc.

Hey Rich, I would have gone pure carnivore in that particular situation.

Wierd that they could give your gf a salad, but couldn't oblige you?

One of the worst things is when I order chicken, and it comes done in bread crumbs!! It's especially crap when that is not indicated on the menu!
