  • Is Splenda ok for kids?

I've never let my kids have any sweeteners.
But again, splenda wasn't on sale here earlier. It is now and I'm wondering, if I could make a dessert with it for the whole family? Is it way safer? Is it safe at all? My kids are 4 and 10, so not actually babies, but still kids for sure

It would be just so nice to be able to nibble a bit, while everyone else is having their desserts. I will not cook two different meals!!!

    moon-

it was cleared by FDA for kids as well as adults. www.splenda.com. in fact, one of the tabs on the website discusses the childhood obesity epidemic.

I would imagine it would be ok, too.

        Thanks for thoughts.

I guess I'll make some induction-legal stuff and never tell them it's not "real"

And of course, sugar is bad for them, as we know...

Re: Is Splenda ok for kids?

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Splenda almost killed me. I'm not the only one who has suffered it's ill side effects. The FDA cleared Splenda on the basis that it did not cause tooth decay, as did sugar. There were no long term studies on the effects of Splenda on the human body. I get the chills everytime someone at work (I own a restaraunt) asks me why I don't carry Splenda...

Do a google search on the side effects of Splenda. Also, www.truthaboutsplenda.com or www.thetruthaboutsplenda.com. After what I went through, I wouldn't give it to my worst enemy. I have medical proof and documentation that Splenda was the cause of "Sweet Sickness" as I call it. And I've also joined a group of consumers online who are waiting for the FDA to recall the product, for a class action lawsuit. I'm working on a book as well. You make the choices for your life and your children, but if your asking for my opinion, give them some Stevia or last resort, pure cane, unrefined sugar.

Re: Is Splenda ok for kids?

I have read and studied both sides of this issue logically

I think facts and controled studies are important and the "truth about Splenda" is not actually the truth imho ..while you may have medical documentation of an issue with Splenda there were plenty of people who have medical documentation about a lot of things that are not pulled off the market...

at the same time ...more than a serving or two per day of any sweetener is too much imho and I know full well people consume much more than that.....all sweeteners are chemicals ....and none are "good" for you or give you any advantage with your nutrition. But they do help some people avoid overeating by giving them something sweet once in a while ...

as far as giving it to kids I would not advise anyone use artificial sweeteners during pregnancy or with kids ....they should only be eating things that are loaded with nutrition and taste good naturally ....

but for adults trying to loose wt having sweeteners available can really help as a tool to loose weight ....if used in limited amounts.

but this is only my opinion based on a lot of factual reading

you know what, do the safest thing possible and ask your pediatrician about giving your kids splenda. you will get opinionated, non-MD advice on this board (mine included), and that's just not appropriate for your question.

Re: Is Splenda ok for kids?

I have also wondered about giving splenda to kids. When I am thinking that if most of the time your children eat healthy foods(whole grains, fruits, veggies, meats, berries, nuts) and for an occasional treat you give them something made with splenda(or even sugar!) it will not do any harm(if your child is at a healthy weight).

this is opinion here and not medical advice that is for sure ..but I think it is a solid opinion that kids should not have foods in their diets that do not provide nutrition to grow unless it is the rare treat you can not raise them in bubbles but you can feed them well while you have some control that is for sure and and lots of fresh foods prepared well is the answer ...again imho

Re: Is Splenda ok for kids?

I have 4 kids who are all active. They play soccer, the all do Karate, and they are constantly in motion. None of them are overweight, but one looks like she may be someday. She is also the biggest food lover out of them. Its so easy to say dont give your kids this or that, but unless you stand over them all day they are gonna somehow, someway get junk. Do I serve them junk? No way! They get balanced healthy meals made with real ingredients. There are always healthy snacks on hand for them to grab. But the occaissonal cookie slips in. Ice cream is a treat. And when the candy holidays show up we let them enjoy in moderation. I am really wary of any kind of synthetic sweetener for them. I would rather give them the real thing than something fake.
Here is what I have learned from my kids. They hate fast food. They would rather go to a deli and get a fresh sandwhich (not subway or quizznos) and a bottle of water or make something at home. They love sweets as all kids do, but when they are indulged they rarely finish a bowl of ice-cream. I have thrown out more uneaten Halloween candy that they would rather not eat, than what they have eaten. They will eat an apple even though there are cookies in the cupboard. I think this is because they have always had lots of healthy food choices and no 'taboo' foods. I think in MHO that more than anything kids need excersize.

I'm not disputing your experience, but the above website[s] carry this note along the bottom:
This website . . . is provided by The Sugar Association, which represents sugar beet and sugar cane farmers across America.

                        It's hardly a neutral third-party website.
