OHG, thats funny - I will have to use that acronym.
I read that it's misleading to discount sugar alcohols, they are still metabolized by the body, and should therefore count, unlike the carbs from fibre.
What did you eat that had that many sugar alcohols that your body reacted like that (just wondering so that I can avoid it in the future)
No, I haven't had a reaction. I had LC ice cream. I expected gas, cramps or the infamous ppppllllltttt...So I thought oh no! what if I'm metabolizing them too!
Yes, if you don't get explosive diarrhea, that means your body has processed those sugar alcohols like regular sugar, meaning you need to count them in your daily carb totals. I've never had the explosive diarrhea...meaning my body loves sugar alcohols and I have to count every single one of them. Since I have to count those carbs, and I'm "cheap" with my carb counts, I'd rather skip the LC ice cream (because I have to count almost all the friggin' carbs anyway) and have chocolate "mousse" with fresh fruit, or an apple with peanut butter, etc.
The one time I ate LC ice cream, it DID give me horrible bloating and gas, but since I didn't get the hershey squirts, I still had to count all the carbs (minus fiber).
Oh. No. *Please* tell me you guys are kidding about having to count sugar alcohols if no...ah, pllltt.
Really? Really?
What if, say, you eat one piece of s/f candy. Like, for instance, a Russell Stover Pecan Delight (which I *loved* my first go-round with Atkins), and no plllt. But you eat *four* pieces of said candy, with a PLLLT result? Does that mean you can eat them, but only if/til you PLLLT?
I would really like to know if this is the case with sugar alcohols! I notice if I eat s/f candy (reese's peanut butter cups YUM) I don't get the runs but the scale doesn't budge either.
From what I have read around the www I have decided that I will count SA carbs if they dont give me the 'pfllttttts' (love that descriptive word!!) but discount them if they do.
And because like Julie I am a bit economical with my carb expenditure it means I just dont eat them because
1. I dont want to waste my carb 'allowance'
2. I dont want to spend the night on the loo!!
The one time I ate a whole pack of sugarfree toffees and spent a whole night experiencing the world dropping out of my bottom (to adapt a well known phrase) told me that even if I dont have to count the carbs it just was not worth it for me!!
