  • Misconceptions about Atkins

Some comments on another thread made me wonder about this.

What were the most ridiculous assumptions/misconceptions you have heard about the Atkins diet?

A woman in line at the salad bar overhearing my talking to my diet buddy about OWL rungs in Atkins announced huffily (is that a word?) that she would never consider Atkins and was instead doing Weight Watchers because it just wasn't healthy to be so unbalanced. (Betcha she's a lot hungrier than I am)

Same here Dream!! My family STILL tells me that ALL the time, that you can only loose water weight on Atkins... I'm like HELLO! If I had over 100 lbs of water lose I've got bigger problems then losing weight!! hehe.

I think the most stupidest (yes that's a word!) things I've heard are just how unhealthy it is and how you'll have a heart attack, have organ problems, can't think clearly and won't have any energy.... ETC! oh and that you have to have carbs to have energy to exercise... LOL

But we're all living proof that all that is just hagwash!!

          Re: Misconceptions about Atkins

I think it's hilarious (yet exceedingly frustrating) that people think we don't eat ANY carbs at all, not even veggies. But then again, most people are incapable of recalling the three fuel sources (fat, carb, protein), let alone categorizing foods into these fuels.

I also get annoyed when people say atkins is a "high-protein" or "all-meat" diet. Read the freakin' book, already.

              Re: Misconceptions about Atkins

The bizarre assumption that "all that bacon" and/or "all that beef" is a requirement on Atkins, or that all protein must come from one or both of these sources and nowhere else.

Furthermore, on Atkins, there is never any reason whatsoever to consume more protein than one's RDA, or what sates the appetite. As for the related kidney failure argument: this one is so far-gone I don't even hear it anymore. Again, I eat no more meat/protein now than I did prior to Atkins. It simply isn't necessary. On that note, why is a bun-free burger at In-N-Out dubbed "Protein-Style" if the amount of protein is exactly the same as before the bun came off? I always thought that was funny.

A declaration that a recipe or entire entrée has "No carbs!" Unless you are only talking about a slab of meat and that's it, this is impossible.

"Dr. Atkins died of a heart attack." No, the late Dr. Atkins sustained injuries from a fall. As for the unrelated heart issue he suffered prior to this, this was a heart infection.

The claim that not an extreme low-calorie/low-fat diet would contribute to this, but the assertion that extracting table sugar and processed starches from the diet and replacing them with starch-free veggies and low-glycemic fruits will lead to muscle loss. Often this claim is made by someone writing a book about another diet.

A girlfriend of a friend of my husbands told me she read about a guy who's kidneys completely stopped working because of the atkins diet...when they got him to the ER, the Dr's found out he was on Atkin's and gave him a big plate of pasta. His kidneys then restarted.

                I'm not making this up.

Yeah this health food shop dude was telling me: After all eating pounds of bacon is not healthy.

I almost gagged, as I don't like bacon that much, and if I eat it I have about 2 strips max.

I think this idea of your body being too 'acidic' is BS as well.

Also when people say Atkins is a high protein diet. *bleah* (If anything it's high fat)

I lost 60 lbs. of water. Yipeee. I knew something was in there. LOL

I just heard this one today. Oh, I can't eat a plate full of bacon for breakfast every morning or I wouldn't feel good. Really??? She was surprised when I listed off a days worth of food for her.

                          or I love this:

I knew a guy who did Atkins and he bought a store cooked chicken and ate the whole thing for lunch every day. He got pretty sick.

I responded...Did he eat veggies or carbs?

No, he was on Atkins so he couldn't have carbs.

Sorry to say but that just is so far from Atkins that it isn't even funny. I then told her a quickie version of what Atkins really is.

No wonder people get the wrong idea about Atkins.

That my blood pressure and cholesterol will rise. On my 4year straight LC streak 2000-2004 My highest blood pressure ever was 106/62. So Atkins give you high blood pressure? LOL
On the the cholesterol thing. It's perfect. Couldn't be better according to the Dr.

                            Some people! Sheesh!

The best one yet was the same people who had watched me eat ribs galore and lose close to 80 lbs telling me after being skinny a few years I'd get fat eating that. I didn't get fat again until I stopped pigging out on ribs and ate like a so called normal person.
Bring on the ribs! I don't want to be normal!
