  • If you go off Induction, is it normal to regain so rapidly?

Ok, not the best choice for me to have made, but I stopped my Induction 10 days in because I was out visiting my sister and didn't want to impose on her/didn't want to hear the tired old lectures about how unhealthy lowcarbing is, etc. I started my diet on 2/06/07 at 215 pounds (and a week premenstrual, which could have added a couple of pounds of water), and on the 16th, weighed 208.

I DID eat a lot of refined carbs and drank a lot of Nutrasweet-laden Diet Coke, but was NOT expecting to come home to a scale last Friday that read 218! Yes, I'm back at premenstrual time, but even then, how could I have gained almost ten pounds in ten days?

Does the diet do something odd to your metabolism that causes rapid weightgain, as my sister claims?

I plan on starting again on Monday, and was wondering if there was any advice/words of warning there might be for this particular unfortunate situation.

the reason why people have such a rapid weight gain coming off atkins (or any diet for that matter) is because they go back to their old eating habits.

I understand that part, definitely. But I just don't understand how it can even be physically possible to gain 10 pounds in ten days...

It is possible to gain 10lbs in ten days if you are gorging yourself on unhealthy foods. However, what I suspect you are experiencing is excessive water retention due to reintroducing unhealthy carbs back into your system rapidly and in excess. It is more than feabable to see a 10 lb gain due to water weight. I had the same happen to me one unfortunate night a year or so ago.

Best thing you can do is get back on plan and drink a lot of water so your body will purge the excess and avoid going off plan again.

        All the best!

Yes, you gain more weight going off Akins then any other diet. But I don't know why. I've gone off plan a few times and always gained a ton of weight. But the good news is that it will usually go off pretty fast. Drink plenty of water and stay on plan andf= those pouns should be gone in about a week.

I takes a lot of fluid (water) in your cells to use and process carbohydrates, so you have a lot of heavy-weighing fluid in your body. Processing and using fat and protein takes way less fluid in the cells. One of the reasons you lose so much on Atkins induction is that with very low carbs, your body gives up the unnecessary fluid. When you introduce the carbs back into your system, your body has to quickly grab and hold on to fluid to fill the cells back up to process the carbs.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

As an aside, I don't tell a lot of people I'm doing Atkins any more, I'm tired of preaching about it and trying to convince people that most of the crap they hear about the diet has NO basis in fact and is often 100% wrong.

I most often tell people I've given up the 4 big "white" starches: Processed Sugar, Bleach Flour, White Rice, White Potatoes. You'd be surprised how close to atkins that gets and keeps you, and most people respond well to that list without telling me my kidneys are going to explode

Re: If you go off Induction, is it normal to regain so rapidly?

The vast majority of it is water retention and that's why it's not only possible, but probable. In a clean induction you dropped a ton of water weight in the first days. A high fat/moderate protein WOE has a power diuretic effect. Add to that that you've burned up the glycogen stores in your liver by inducting - and that's a solid 2+lbs by itself.

Then you ate all the stuff you shouldn't. Glycogen stores restored. Water retention back. BOOM. 10lbs and a lesson about why it's simply NOT worth it!

As for the low-carbing arguement.....I can be a real witch about it and people who know me and love me know it's not a line to cross with me.

Since when is it polite or acceptable to worry more about what's on my plate than what's on yours? Did I *ask* you?!! Have you done as much reading on nutrition as I have? Are you my doctor? Why when I was 240lbs, polishing off a Whopper and onion rings and snickers bar were you quiet but now that I have a salad on my plate you're concerned? Bite me.

I'll scream Atkins from the tallest towers because that's what I do, that's how I got healthy, and that's who I owe it to. Bring it on.

Re: If you go off Induction, is it normal to regain so rapidly?

Atkins is a way of eating. It is using the combination of protein, fat and carbs to get control over weight gain and loss. Your experienced weight gain may serve to give you great motivation not to cheat. Don't get too discouraged though. This way of eating works but you must stick to the plan exactly. Yes, you may lose weight fast in the beginning and you may have times when you struggle with what you perceive as stalling later on. Weight loss is a process and takes time. If it were too rapid, it would be unhealthy. I look at my weight as something that has to be conquered and each day I make decisions based on my desire to be slim and more importantly healthy! You had a bit of a stumble and gained back some weight. Now you need to decide if you want to get back into the game and WIN! You can do this!
