  • Considering changing from a weight to a size based goal

    Hey everyone,

I've been doing Atkins for 18 months now and have had success up to a point. I have had various periods of binge eating and gaining and my body has stuck at 177lbs for the best part of a year now.

I really want to move on and get slimmer and considering my previous frustrations and hangups with the scale (particularly water gain after exercise) I was considering moving to a size based goal instead and kind of ignoring the weight.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

If I do this I'm not sure what size to go for and also which store! They vary so much. Or maybe I should go for UK 12 measurements (below). It that even possible??

    My current stats
chest 40 inches (which is an 18 )
    waist 30
    hips 41

    UK size 12 stats are
    chest 35
    waist 28
    hips 38

    Hi Alexa...

I was rambling on in my journal and I decided sort of the same thing last week.I haven't budged from 150-152 in about a year,I went through my clothes gave a ton of jeans away and decided to shop in the womens section instead of the juniors that I used to fit in!! I came to realize everytime I get on that damn scale I get upset look in the mirror and see fat. When I don't get on the scale do my miles, steps, squats, abs and weights...I look in the mirror and I see changes/toning. It is so discouraging at times. So no more junior sizes I need to be satisfied with myself instead of beating myself up.I don't know anything about uk sizes so i can't help you there..but by your pics your doing a great job!!!

      Hey Char,

      Thanks

You describe it exactly - negative thinking from the scale is exactly like that whereas if I stay away I feel my body more and am more in tune with it.

I'm reluctant to give up my goal weight though - I've been obsessing over it for nearly two years! To lose 2 inches off my hips and waist would be great! Perhaps I'll stick with that.

I think that that is a great idea for you! Why not go to the store and find a pair of jeans that you like and buy a size smaller?? A pair that you can't quite or can just get done up?? When you fit them you get to go shopping again. Just a thought. You look great in the pic!!! I am surprised to see you want to lose another 12!

Re: Considering changing from a weight to a size based goal

Someone else just posted about buying smaller size clothing and keep trying them on til they fit. I bought a pair of XL swim shorts that I thought for sure would fit. Come home, and I can't even get the snaps on each side to come within 10 inches of each other, let alone close. But since I've started, they've been getting closer and closer together. I don't weigh myself everyday, however, I used to be a daily weigh-er and that has only led to downfall for me. So this time, I asked my daughter to hide the scale somewhere really hard to find, and she can only return it to my bathroom floor tuesday nights, and must immediately hide it again wednesday mornings ----those are my weekly weigh days. Basically, I'm using those swim shorts more than the scale/numbers and it's very motivating. And, I must agree that you look fantastic!

              Hey Elsie, Valleriek and DesertRain,

Thanks for saying I look nice You can't really see my thighs in that picture! I'd like to lose some from there and a little more from my tummy - just tone it all up.

Buying a smaller size of something is a good idea. I might just try it. I've had it with the scale.

You are welcome. If you are looking more to tone now I would definately go by size as muscle weighs more than fat. Time for some Pilates.
