My boyfriend and I started Atkins one week ago today. We are still in the induction phase and are NOT CHEATING AT ALL. He has lost 7 lbs, his blood pressure is lower, jeans are looser. We are eating the exact same things (NO SUGAR NO CARBS). I did the Ketostix today and it read 5 or the first pink section right after the beige...not sure what else I should be doing...any suggestions?

I think that you need to post your menu. Lots of people use artificial sweetners or drink diet soda which derails them.

when you say you are eating "the same things" do you mean in the same amount? I think that basic physiological differences between men and women usually mean that men can "usually" tolerate a higher amount of carbohydrates and/or calories due to their larger mass and lower body fat %, so although I am not a doctor and don't know your exact situation, I might suggest NOT matching your bf's diet exactly especially in portions?

How much weight do you need to lose? Did you measure your body before you began. The tape measure will show results when the scale doesn't. It doesn't matter what color the keto sticks are. As long as they change color (even trace) you're in ketosis.
I agree, post your menu of what your eating. Maybe there's something we can help you with there.

Hi:
I am 5 ft. 2 inches and my start weight was 157. My goal weight is 120-125 EVEN 130 would be okay. Actually I'm not a big scale person because before children I never needed a scale or diet. My youngest is 10 years old and since she was born the pounds slowly started coming on and I've tried everything. I turned 38 this year and I have a small tummy (never had one of those). My metabolism is non existent. After 7 days I weigh 155.
My boyfriend and I are eating the same items but not the same amounts.
Breafast
2 hard boiled eggs or a cheese and bacon omelette
Coffee with 1 packet of splenda
Lunch - 2 cheese slices with 2 slices of roast beef
Dinner - baked chicken breast - salt and pepper only - small romaine salad with regular italian dressing
Snack - 2 cups of Sugar Free Jello or a couple slices of cheese.
We drink about 3 cups of coffee per day but only use SPLENDA wtih one packet so that is only 3 total carbs.
I have lost 2 pounds and he's lost 7 or 8 lbs. I don't know how to measure body fat..... On the bright side for him - his blood pressure has decreased and his jeans are VERY LOOSE.

how big is your boyfriend? It would seem to me, that 2 pounds vs. 7 pounds might not be as drastic a difference as it might seem. At any rate, I think that one week is definitely too short a period to judge the program. Keep up your healthy eating, keep measuring, and maybe consider cutting back a little bit on the caffeine, and making sure you're not eating too much cheese ( but be sure to get enough fat in your diet, e.g. oils, butter, natural fats, etc ). I know you'll thank yourself if you at least stick with induction for a little while longer

Caffeine can be a staller for some people, cutting back and switching to decaf would be a good idea. I don't see that you are getting three cups of veggies in. What type of cheese slices are you using? Does the roast beef you are eating at lunch contain sugar? Most lunch meats do. I don't see much fat in your menu, Atkins is a high fat diet.Karen - SAHM to C&C

We are eating chedar or american cheese. Tuna fish with mayo. My boyfriend weighed 190 and now weighs 183. He is about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches tall. The roast beef is cut from an actual roast no sugar added. Any more suggestions on food would be helpful. We are starving...mostly at night. I have the book but unless you have time to cook (which we don't...) we just feel so uncertain what to eat. Is salami or peperoni bad? What other fats can you recommend...anything with fat that I've looked at has carbs or sugar???

American cheese isn't allowed on induction. Cheddar is but make sure that it doesn't contain starches (shredded cheese does).
Cooking with butter, olive oil - that adds fat to the foods you eat. Mayo - make sure that doesn't contain sugar as well, alot of brands do. Dukes and Trader Joes are the only two I know of with no sugar.
Try using fitday.com to log your foods and make sure you are eating enough during the day. It also breaks down what you eat - you should get around 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs.Karen - SAHM to C&C

Thanks for taking the time to write. I signed up for that fit tracker. Works very well. When I put it what I ate today and what I'm having for dinner my fats are 63% protein 34% and carbs 3% and thats even with the american cheese in my omelette. Total of 1410 calories. I have not had any snacks because I just don't know what to snack on other than Sugar Free Jello. So....I think I am doing okay other than I desperately need some snack ideas. I will cut the american cheese and try to cut back to 2 cups of coffee per day. I wasn't expecting to drop 10 lbs in a week but was hoping for more than 2 lbs. Do some people take longer to get into Ketosis?? What are you snacking on?? Again thanks for writing. I want this to work so badly.

1140? That is your problem hun. You are staving yourself. When your body takes in too few calories it goes into starvation mode and holds on to everything. You should be eatting more like 1500 or 1600 a day.
I did the same thing. I was eating around 1000 calories a day and not dropping on ounce, as soon as I started eating just below my BMR I started losing again.

i would like to add, i too ate sugarfree jello on induction and someone suggested for me not to eat that. well i quit eating it and started losing more. you might want to try that too. are you drinking atleast 64 oz water? it is suggested also that you drink half your body weight in ounces of water. hope this helps.~renee~start date: 6-6-08
