  • Carb Blockers????

Hey everyone,i'm finally back after a long break.
i would like to know is anyone taking CARB INTERCEPT ?
my friend is on it and is losing.
i was thinking that it would be helpful for those times when u dont have foods to eat that are in ur allowed lists.
the pills block some not all of your carbs and u pass them out.
    what do u guys think

I don't believe in those pills. I make sure I always have food that is acceptable.. Actually, I typically don't keep things that aren't Atkins friendly in the house. Even if all I have are frozen chicken breast and canned veggies.

I'm with Lyssie here. You can't eat something 'carby' and then just pop the pill and say that everything is all right. If it was that easy, we would all buy some magic pills and wake up one day having the body of Jennifer Aniston. Unfortunately it doesn't work that way...

If you are on induction, you can always keep some cheese sticks, crackers or pork rinds with you. If you eat out, plan to go in a place where you can order something 'legal' for the rung you are at.

I don't want Jennifer Anniston's... I want Reese Witherspoon's - well, the 8 years ago Reese, maybe not the 3 months ago Reese. You know?

DANDR 2002 doesn't have anything on "carb blockers" because these pills didn't gain popularity until after the book was published. But Atkins Diabetes Revolution does have a paragraph or two on them. That book was the book Dr. Atkins was in the process of writing when he died.

Here's what ADR has to say about carb blockers:

            Starch Blocking Beans

An extract made from white kidney beans is now widely sold as an over the counter "starch blocker". These heavily advertized products claim to "neutralize" the starch in high carb foods. All you have to do, the ads claim, is take a couple of these pills at the sart of a meal, and they'll block your absorptioin of about 75$ of the calories you eat from the carbohydrates. Starch blocking products do contain a substance found naturally in white kidney beans (as well as some other beans and also wheat) that inhibits or blocks amylase, the enzyme you body uses to break down carbohydrates in your intestinal tract. In fact, the starch blocker supplements work in a similar way to the prescription drug acarbose (Precose or Glyset).

Both the supplements and the prescription drugs have serious drawbacks. they're not meant to aid weight loss---they're designed to help control blood sugar---but that doesn't stop unscrupulous manufactueres from pushing the supplements as a way to lose weight while eating all you want of anything you want. No studies of acarbose have shown that the drug causes weight loss, although a few studies have shown that some people with impaired glucose tolerance are less likely to become diabetic if they take the drug. The side effects of blocking carbhoydrate digestion can be very unpleasant. Severe cramps, diarrhea, and gas are likely. Many people using acarbose experience flatulence. Dr. Atkins never prescribed acarbose. Why take a costly drug with nasty side effects when you can benefit your health considerably more by controlling the carbs in your diet to begin with?
