    Re: Egg Beaters??

You are asking if a processed product is better than real eggs. Forget it. Eggs are about the perfect food. Contains lots of good stuff you need. And studies have shown that in spite of what people used to think eating eggs does not increase cholesterols. In fact one study showed that eating eggs lowered cholesterol

There is only one reason to eat egg beaters - if you want to eat raw eggs in a shake for instance.

Actually- there are two reasons- to keep calorie counts lower & shakes.

I eat egg-beaters when I'm towards the end of OWL and in Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance to cut down on overall calorie consumption. I like them. I would stick to regular eggs until you're farther along- but out of all the evils available to us, this one isn't an evil - it's a choice for farther down the road

7 grams protein, <1 gram carb, and no fat @ 30 calories per 1/4 cup

      INGREDIENTS:
Egg whites (99%), less than 1%: Natural flavor, color (includes beta carotene), spices, salt, onion powder, vegetable gums (xanthan gum, guar gum).

Vitamins and Minerals: Calcium sulfate, iron (ferric phosphate), vitamin E (alpha tocopherol acetate), zinc sulfate, calcium pantothenate, vitamin B12, vitami nB2 (riboflavin), vitamin B1 (thiamine mononitrate), vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), folic acid, biotin, vitamin D3.

There aren't that many calories in eggs The boiled one I had this morning had about 70. Well worth it for a perfect little healthy meal. And super Atkins friendly.

          LOL.

One egg doesn't make an omelet, but 1/2 cup of Egg Beaters does for 60 calories. Protein rich, fluffy, and holds all the veggies and cheese I want to put it in while keeping my ratios in check at Pre-Maintenance/Maintenance levels, leaving me a bit more room to make other choices too.

There is a time and a place to start making small adjustments in the choices we make as we progress through this WOE. Not all things need to be vilified and are still perfectly acceptable choices on this WOE.

            Re: Egg Beaters??

I've always used Eggbeaters in shakes to avoid the salmonella issue (rare/common - still a risk with raw eggs), as well as a means to avoid an egg-beating step when making omelets & chicken fried chicken or nuggets. The one With Yolk is my preference, & comes in so handy.

              Okay, I am officially confused.

A while ago someone recommended that I use egg beaters rather than eggs... I don't like yolks so only eat whites for my omlettes, or scrambled eggs and throw out the yolk. I thought all of the egg beaters included the yolks though?? I think that the calorie counts may be higher for me - 1 egg white is something like 16 calories or whatever vs. 60 per 1/4c, but if it does include yolks maybe that's why?

                Re: Egg Beaters??

We have one here called 'simply whites' which does not include any yolk, just egg whites (and are white in colour). But I think even normal egg beaters are just yolks too as you can see in the ingredients in the post above, I think they're just coloured yellow to look like regular beaten eggs. That's how they keep the calorie count so low.

I'm with Brook, I use them in maintenance as well to keep my overall calorie count down (that 75 cals definately does add up when you eat a lot of eggs). As well..I find it convenient for recipes where I don't need a whole egg, or want just a white. I hate throwing out the yolks it seems like such a waste!

                  Re: Egg Beaters??

Okay, that makes more sense. So it's basically the same as me eating my eggs the way I usually do, except with colour added.
