So, I had my 1st physical today since starting Atkins.....

    Hey Papa, long time no talk. I went to the doctors as well and got the same info. My Dr. was not opposed to Atkins as well but he wanted me to make sure that I ate more veggies as well. No direction as given as to what veggies I was to eat so I am staying with the approved Atkins ones (just more that my 3 cups). In addition, I was told to make sure that I watched my sugars, which I was already doing via Atkins.

    Keep up the great work and I am pretty sure that once we get down to a lower weight, the Dr's instuctions are going to change.
    If God didn't want us to eat animals, he wouldn't have made them out of meat.

      Papa, I didn't see bloodwork results really showing improvement for 6 months. Now I am in the optimum category for ALL cholesterol and sugar related tests--total chol 149. HDL 75, LDL 30. Triglycerides 40. I credit the exercise most, Atkins getting my insulin under control second.

      One of the things to think about is this---why does she want you to add the beans and veggies? The veggies are a no brainer-nutrients. Beans add a lot of fiber and protein. Well you can get healthier proteins by adding salmon, more chicken, etc instead of beef and the fiber is easy to add via flaxseed or psyllium husks but doctors tend to think beans first. I would say follow the rungs, add fiber elsewhere instead of beans til you get to that rung and wait it out to see what 6 months will bring in bloodwork. The weight you lose without cravings will offset the positive effects she wants you to see from the beans, etc. as long as you are moving up the rungs and making sure you get your nutrients and fiber. Glad you are sitcking around.

        I'm glad you are staying Papa2!! About your wife being a smidge overboard....(I'm being nice) it happens to the best of us....but with a litle prodding and being led the correct way she may just come around!!!

        As far as pasta....jullienne some zucchini and yellow squash, make a little tomato sauce watered down with some Italian seasoning and make some meatballs (with pork rinds as the binder) -- or use spaghetti squash as the noodles. There are always ways to fool the mind!!!

        Put the book where it's easy for her to pick up -- the bathroom is a good place...beside her bed. Take those da*n bars and shakes and throw them out - they aren't legal anyway! Show her the board and let her take a few spins around so she knows what's going on and how easy it is.
