  • What's your favorite cookbook?

I am looking into buying an Atkins cookbook and I see there are several available. I have a lot of used bookstores around here so I was going to see what I could grab for cheap.
Now I know there is a plethora of recipes available on the internet, so is it even worth it to get a Atkins cookbook? Do you have a favorite?

    Thanks

        Re: What's your favorite cookbook?

I haven't made many out of Dr. Atkins's own books, because most recipes are more "gourmet" then I am...I'm more of a hamburger helper kind of girl. I recently bought a book that I have gone through and marked almost every dang recipe as something to try...haven't ACTUALLY tried one yet, but they all look so good and totally my style. It was one of George Stella's books, Livin Low Carb: Family Recipes Stella Style. I read a bunch of reviews on Amazon.com before picking one.

I use Linda's site a lot as well...especially early on! It's sorta food porn for me....gotta be careful or I just spend hours searching the site and drooling at the pictures.

And I've grabbed some great recipes off this site as well!

        ~280~270~260~250~240~230~220~210~200~190

        Realistic Final Goal: 190
        Stretch Goal: 140

Successfully did Atkins in 1998 using 1992 copy of the book...before it was "hip". Lost 60lbs, exercised daily, felt and looked great. And then I moved in with a junk-food loving man, my mom got sick and passed away, then I suffered a spinal cord injury, and junk-food dude left me...and now I weigh 292lbs. That's 22lbs MORE than I weighed the first time around. It's 10 years later...I know this will work for me again.

            Re: What's your favorite cookbook?

For me, the "low carb" cookbooks are good if you want to do low carb baking/desserts. But for basic cooking (meat, veggies, sauces) the regular basic cookbooks are very good. Many foods are "naturally" low carb. And basic, general cookbooks offer plenty of naturally low carb recipes or recipes that can be low carb with minor changes (like substituting or omitting some ingredients.) In reading some low carb cookbooks, they also add things that aren't completely necessary, imo. I've seen low carb recipes of Hollandaise sauce that use gum thickeners....no need to do that if you use the traditional Hollandaise recipes, which are natually low carb.

Even cooking magazines or "women's" magazine have naturally low carb recipes. I found a great recipe for pecan stuffed mushrooms in Gourmet Magazine that recipe is completely legal for OWL Phase. I have a thread in the Food Chat section called "Recipes I will try this year"---none of those linked recipes are from "low carb" sites and all of them are low carb, some are even Induction friendly.

Also, the non-Atkins recipes can give good ideas. For example, I've eliminated the pasta from pastarecipes and made them into really tasty vegetable side dishes or even main meals by adding more meat and/or veggies.

But I think if you are a beginning cook or a person who like non-fussy food, getting a basic cookbook that teaches you proper cooking techniques for roasting, grilling, sauteeing, preparing veggies, etc. is invaluable. For that, I recommend The Way to Cook by Julia Child, How to Cook by Delia Smith, The Joy of Cooking (any edition), anything from Cooks Illustrated, Complete Techniques by Jacques Pepin. The very basic and simply prepared foods tend to be naturally low carb.

              Re: What's your favorite cookbook?

My favourite is Karen Barnaby's Low Carb Gourmet. I think a second favourite for me is Dana Carpender. But I kind of also think that you should be careful buying one. Most of the low carb cookbooks I have seen are not very low carb or they use ingredients that are not very available.

So I would suggest using the internet or do as Megs say just start to change your favourite recipes into low carb varieties. Unless you really come across a bargain. I found Veronica Atkins cookbook for a dollar on a garagesale so I piced it up.

You know I have several low carb cook books, and the one I go to most often is my big blue binder of recipies - I have found on the internet from various websites and put together myself.
