Read the book 'Good Calories, Bad Calories' by Gary Taubes if you want a real eye-opener regarding the whole "fat is bad for you" hypothesis.

I'm only a few chapters in and I've lost count of the times I've had to put the book down in exasperation.

When people have an agenda, facts and science become irrelevant. Once the agenda becomes accepted dogma, you can forget about any dissenting opinions getting much air time.... or further research funding for that matter.

I can definitely understand the voice in the back of the head syndrome, though. I had it myself. I figured I was losing weight... but probably killing myself in the process. Oh well... beauty knows no pain... right?

It so happens that summer before last my business partner and I were feeling flush and decided that the company could afford to buy insurance policies on the both of us. In order to get qualified, we had to have a blood work-up done.

Now... my partner is one of those ex-California, organic granola, don't put no fat in my food kinda guys.... weighs in at 170 lbs... etc... etc... I on the other hand was weighing in at 270 and attempting one of my low-carb stints.

Well... my blood report came back very favorable. Cholesterol levels were great. Blood pressure was beautiful. etc...

My partner, on the other hand came back with his numbers looking pretty bad and is now trying to "watch his cholesterol" by avoiding saturated fats like the plague.

That was enough convincing for me.

Re: Do you still try to eat low fat/calorie?

Our ancestors did not eat bread, cake, sugar and other high carb foods. They ate mostly meat a lot of fat a few vegetables, and occasionally berries and other fruits when they were in season. Sometimes they even shunned the lean parts of the animal in favor of the fat. They knew that the fat would keep them going help them stay full and keep them nourished over a long period of time. So, when someone says it's common sense to eat low fat I guess it really is. But, look at what common sense has gotten us. Millions of people with diabetes, heart disease and other weight related conditions. As for me, I will continue staying away from those nasty carbs which were making me feel so awful.

I went to the doctor's a few days ago, and my blood pressure which had been about 160/90 a few months ago, was 124/78, the lowest I've seen it in years. It wasn't even that low three years ago when I had lost 50 lbs, (all regained +) and working out six days a weeks. I know there's only one thing I can attribute that kind of dramatic change to and it's not eating low fat.
