Re: Bacon
It depends...check the label and see what the contents are. DANDR does warn to watch the processed foods...and bacon is processed and has nitrates. Also, alot of bacon is cured with sugar...double check the ingredients.
On the other hand...sometimes the alternative to bacon is something carby...and I'd rather eat the bacon than the carbs...good luck!Carrie

Re: Bacon
How does bacon qualify as a "processed" food that should be limited/avoided? My understanding is that it's simply cured pork. When I think of "processed" I think of shakes and bars with a dozen or more ingredients. Of course, with respect to the bacon, the addition of dextrose and nitrates are another story.Originally posted by chauber View PostIt depends...check the label and see what the contents are. My experience with bacon has been that the sodium content makes me hold water like a camel. I cut it out of my diet altogether because it was making me hold 3-4 lbs of water.- M/37

Re: Bacon
The only issues with bacon are the possible sugars in it and the nitrates in it. If the bacon is carb free, I wouldn't worry about eating too much of it.

Re: Bacon
I wasn't meaning that it should be avoided...but the book does say to watch the nitrates in some meats...not that I have the exact page on me. I was implying that if it is not cured with sugar then you can eat it in moderation as long as it doesn't affect your weight loss.Originally posted by Slapshot View PostHow does bacon qualify as a "processed" food that should be limited/avoided? Technically processed means 'to treat or prepare by some particular process, as in manufacturing' so curing meat is processing it. Non-processed foods are foods that are in their natural form...not like being still on the hoof but not having anything added like sugar, nitrates, or other chemicals.Carrie

Re: Bacon
Gotcha. I had a different understanding of "processed" foods (e.g. chips, cookies, frankenfoods, etc.) I never really thought of pork and salt as 'processed' but I can see how that can fit your definition.Originally posted by chauber View PostI wasn't meaning that it should be avoided...but the book does say to watch the nitrates in some meats...not that I have the exact page on me.
