  • Thanksgiving plans??

    Happy thanksgiving weekend all Canadians.

How are you planning to stay within the straight and and narrow?

For me, on rung 9, I usually partake in everything (except sugary items) but I have to watch the total carb count and amounts. So it is easier than it was the first time around.

    Re: Thanksgiving plans??

I am half Canadian and try to celebrate Thanksgiving with my kids to have some traditions they can remember. Because the American Thanksgiving isn't too far away, I am making roast pork for this one. I just stick to the meat, veggies and deviled eggs. I will make other things for the kids. I am not making a low carb dessert. Sweets aren't such a big deal to me.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm bringing a journal, measuring cups, and lots of veggies, lol.

We're having potluck here today - smells fantastic, but I brought my own food, lol. I might have some chicken - depending on what it looks like though. I'd like to see the packaging before I partake.

I'm just excited to go up to the cabin to get away from work, lol. I'm ready for some real R&R - and of course chasing the baby around since she's started running now.

        Happy Thanksgiving!

I still have until November until Thanksgiving, but I'll do what I've done every year since I've been on Atkins: eat the turkey, eat the salad, bring along a container of real Hollandaise sauce to eat with the steammed broccoli, bring some other side dish I can eat, and then go for a long, long walk afterwards so I don't have to look at a lot of food sitting around the tables, etc.

Man, I don't even want to THINK about Thanksgiving! Last year we carbo-loaded something AWEFUL! Potato-leek soup, stuffing-muffins, turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, some veggies that I don't remember...hahaha

I know my hun wants to do up a big thing this year but I'd rather not..thinking about how stuffed I felt and how cruddy I felt last year...ugh! Maybe we'll take the day to sleep late, work out, and...well...do anything but eat carbs.

I am going to my brothers. I have already told his gf what I can't eat. I get to bring the salad. I might make the Hollandaise sauce to eat on my califlower, and green beans, then turkey and salad for me. I am bringing my measuring cups too though to be safe...I am doing this so I am going to be careful. I am also making this jello/cream thing off Linda's site so I can have that while the family eats pumpkin pie.

I have often made mashed cauliflower in the past - may do it again this year. It is a good replacement for potatoes - and taste very good with some of the turkey juice on it. I usually reserve some of the turkey "juice" before flour is added to it.
I will make the gravy with guar gum this year to save on some carbs.

You can make pumpkin desert to eat while they are eating pumpkin pie...it's easy and tastes just like the real thing - just without the crust! I have it quite often (even when it's not a holiday!)

                Pumpkin Desert

                Mix the following together:

1/2 Cup Libby's Pure Pumpkin (NOT pie filling which has sugar)
                1 ounce cream cheese

                1 ounce heavy whipping cream
cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cloves to taste (or use pumpkin pie spice)
                1 Packet of Splenda

Heat in the microwave for 30 seconds - Stir. Heat another 2 minutes

                Top with whipped cream

I make this with and without the cream cheese -- I like it better without it.

                  Re: Thanksgiving plans??

Going to the in-laws...I'll bring my own coffee cream, but make do with whatever else is there - turkey, salad, maybe hot veggies. Doubt I'll get around to making myself desert...but I might...I hate listening to my MIL reciting the list of things I "can't eat". If I bring my own desert she won't be able to say as much about it...I like the idea of the hollandaise, or cheese sauce for the veggies, I might try to do that (if I find the time)

This is not a big deal to me - it is just another meal. The 70 lbs I've lost ARE a big deal. Nothing tastes as good as (getting thin) feels!

The cheese sauce recipe I use is really simple and quick - a bit heavy on cheese so watch your limits on the day
                    Rich Cheese Sauce
                    2 ounces grated cheese
(I like red leicester or a mature cheddar for more flavour)
1 fluid ounce of double cream (heavy cream)
                    1/2 ounce of cream cheese

Melt it all together, stirring frequently, either in the microwave or in a small pan on the stove top.
I can't find the thread from which I got the recipe, but it was here on ADBB somewhere.
The original 2-serving recipe was for double the quantity and had a teaspoon of mustard in it but I prefer it without the mustard.

If you make a larger quantity than the one serving here the leftovers makes a great cheese 'butter' after a night in the fridge.

Mmmmm. Red Leicester. Haven't had that in ages! But my favorite is Shropshire Blue.

I could never live in the UK and do Atkins, Elizellen. My cheese allowance would be shattered every day. LOL

FYI for anyone bringing their own Hollandaise sauce---make extra! One year, my home made hollandaise went head-to-head with the stuff mixed from a packet and mine won. The following year it went up against hollandaise from a jar and beat it soundly. When people get the chance to eat real food, they do. Unfortunately for us, it means we have to bring enough for ourselves and for them.

Also for those who have made it to berries round Linda's cranberry sauce is very good

                            CRANBERRIES

                            1 cup water
1 cup granulated Splenda or equivalent liquid Splenda
12 ounce bag cranberries, fresh or frozen (no need to thaw, if frozen)
Wash the cranberries in a colander, picking out any bad berries. In a large pot, bring the water and Splenda to a boil. Add the berries to the water mixture; bring to a boil and simmer, without stirring, 10 minutes. Cool in the pot, then refrigerate or freeze.
Makes about 1 1/2 cups or six 1/4-cup servings
                            Can be frozen

I made the mock Danish and added a tsp of pumpkin. I brought that to my brothers and when everyone was eating pumpkin pie, I ate my danish with a tablespoon of more pumpkin on top and whipped cream. It was amazing. I will so make this again.

I need good. I had no potatoes, no gravy measure out the green beans and califlower. I had salad with my own dressing and water with dinner. I stuck to my plan and I am happy. I was the one that made the mashed potatoes and never even tried a little taste. I am so proud of myself and found it really easy to stick to the plain.

I am doing this and no turkey will stop me...Happy thanksgiving, I hope others had the same luck.
