  • Veggies and bloating

I am in the veggie challenge and eating more than 17 net grams of veggies every day so far this week. But now my stomach feels uncomfortably full when I exercise. I feel bloated like I do after a cheat. I'm pretty sure it's related to my eating veggies at every meal now. I'm staying away from the scale because I want to finish out the challenge even though I feel like I've gained. Any advice? Besides the first day when I overdid the calories a bit, I have been right in my normal calorie range, but my stomach felt full and yucky last night when I went walking. And the day before I couldn't finish my 2nd mile either because I was so uncomfortable. Has this happened to anyone else?

I have to admit that I was probably always on the low side with veggies before this week. They have a tendency to knock me out of ketosis--which I'm guessing has happened this week as well, but I haven't checked. Anyway, I'm glad that I am eating more veggies this week but just wondered if anyone else gets bloated from them and if there is something I can do about it besides eat less veggies. (Side note: the only new veggie I've tried is spaghetti squash. I have been eating more than usual of everything though in order to hit my 17 net veggie carb goal.)

    Huh?

    Have you read:

Can you post exactly what vegetables you're eating and the net carbs?

    And what else you're eating/drinking?

It is hard to imagine veggies making anybody fat -
It is possible to overdo everything though even good things And some of us are very carb sensitive. I would watch getting too many carbs from tomatoes.
I don't know about bloating from veggies though.
The menu you posted in the Challengs thread suggest that you ate a lot of processed meat. Now those contain sugars (dextrose) ofen fillers like starches and phony spices and plenty of salt. Most of us bloat from salt.

Have you had regular BM this week. Take it from me, you need to get enough fiber. Not going can make you feel like that. When I was obstructed my stomach was so bloated. It felt horrible.

If everything is regular, then are you sure your not allergic to something you are eating? My mother is allergic to bell peppers and they make her feel really horrible. Her whole body bloats up for a few days and she feels so full and icky afterwards.

What veggies are you eating? Maybe post a menu (with measurements).

I hope you don't mind me asking... how did your mother know she was allergic to them? Was there a medical test done or based upon observation of how she felt after each time of eating them?

          Thanks,

            Re: Veggies and bloating

When she was younger my grandparents noticed she would become sick (not feeling good, complain of stomach pain, etc) after they ate them. As she got older she experimented with them and how they made her feel. She discussed it with her doctor at the time (way before I was born) and he told her it was most likely a food allergy and to try and avoid them.

I have the same thing with oranges. It started out as a burning when I urinated, as I got older I would get rashes on my genitals and around my month whenever I ate an orange or drank orange juice. When I was 9 my mother asked my doctor about it and he said I was most likely allergic to the acid in the orange, since simular things happen (but not as bad) after I have lemon or lime juice.

People in my family are allergic to the weirdest things...my grandmother was allergic to cheese...not lactose but something else in the cheese...I never really asked what though .

if i eat to much fiber vegetables they make me sick

bloated and haveing to go to the bathroom 15 hours after eating them

when i eat vegetables it has to be the lowest fiber ones

heres a tip when you eat broccoli cut as much of the stem off as possible and only eat the top flower parts the stem's are where the fiber is

i think only people who suffer from constipation enjoy fiber while for me it just hurts my gut xD

i think other vegetables and even nuts and seeds and etc can have there fiber greatly reduced with speical cooking or preparation methods i need to learn them so my food choices can be larger

No, this isn't true. While there are some people who can't handle much fiber, I think it's safe to say that most people don't get sick when they eat fiber.

ok i guess most people can handle decent amounts of fiber xD

i have IBS but as long as im on Atkins and tweak a few things like low fiber , no vinegar etc then its 100% managed i dont suffer from it at all

fiber really is not THAT bad even for me and its not near as bad as vinegar or some of the other foods i avoid

Side note: the only new veggie I've tried is spaghetti squash.
Adding to what the others have said... If spaghetti squash is a new veggie you ate, you might have an intolerance to it. The symptoms of food intolerance are similar to those of blood sugar and yeast, and bloating is among them.

My hubby seems to be having the same problem you described. He's on his 2nd day of induction and he got diahrrea and cramps. He had 2 cups of spinach yesterday and 2 today...he might have to eat something else for veggies. I don't know what he should eat instead if 2 cups of salad if it's giving him diahrrea.

Lisa, is your DH used to eating that much spinach? Very often when someone switches over to eating a lot of veggies (from not that much at all), the body complains until it gets used to it. Might try having smaller portions of different veggies rather than a lot of one kind.

I was going to say what Georgiana said about the squash and wanted to add that since you have upped your veggies a lot there may be one that didn't bloat you before but makes you feel differently now that you are eating more of it. I know that green pepper and broccoli are two that I need to eat in smaller quantities rather than larger. While I wouldn't qualify them as an allergy, they do affect my digestion. I don't give them up but where I might have had a cup of broccoli for dinner I will now have 1/2 a cup and a second veg that doesnt affect me in the same way.

                            Re: Veggies and bloating

I have heard a number of people I have known over the years complain of stomach/bathroom issues when they first started adding a lot of vegetables to their diet after years of eating mostly french fries, potatoes, corn and other such popular (starchy, mostly non-green) vegetables. From what they all reported, this corrected itself after a week or so and then they felt better than they ever did BEFORE they started eating all the extra veggies. Almost like the vegetables were working overtime to clean out their system after years of not nearly enough fiber, though that is not necessarily what was actually happening.

I would make sure I was drinking enough water to work with the extra fiber, and not overdoing it on cheese.

                            Just an observation.

                              Hi Mizski,

No, my DH is definitely not used to eating that amount of veggies...he hates most veggies and rarely ate any (except potatoes/fries). I am hoping it's just the sudden "diet" change, because salad greens are one of the few veggies he doesn't mind.
