5 Foods you should never ditch when you diet - Healthy Living on Shine

    Shenanigans!

    1.) Bread
Slim-Down Effect: Contains carbohydrates, which boost brain chemicals that curb overeating
Bread is an excellent source of carbs, which your brain needs to produce serotonin, a neurotransmitter that promotes feelings of comfort and satisfaction, says Nina T. Frusztajer, MD, a Boston-based physician who specializes in nutrition and is coauthor of The Serotonin Power Diet. "As your body digests carbohydrates, it releases insulin, which helps channel tryptophan—an amino acid—into the brain. Tryptophan then gets converted to serotonin," she explains. When serotonin levels are optimal, you feel calm and happy and have fewer cravings; when they're low, you feel depressed and irritable, making you more likely to overeat.
Breads containing whole grains are healthiest, and one serving equals one slice of bread, half an English muffin, or a small roll.
This is a load of hooey. I eat bread, I want more bread shortly, and so on, and so on, and so on. Eating carb-rich foods results in getting cravings for more carb-rich foods, and the cycle never ends. Nothing in bread makes me not want to eat more (unless it's just a crappy bread)!

    2.) Pasta
Slim-Down Effect: A high fluid content keeps you satisfied longer
Cooked pasta and rice are about 70% water—and eating fluid-rich foods keeps you fuller longer, compared with dry foods, according to research from the British Nutrition Foundation. Like bread, the carbs in pasta boost serotonin to help curb overeating. The proper portion of pasta is ½ cup cooked, or about the size of an ice-cream scoop.
Choose whole grain varieties for filling fiber, and add grilled chicken and lots of veggies to bulk up your dish even more.
Pasta is another one of those foods that I can eat, and eat, and eat... and want more and more and more... expecting a person to eat an ice cream scoop's worth is silly. It's better to forgo than try to manage that nonsense.

    3.) Potatoes
Slim-Down Effect: Form resistant starch, a fiber that burns fat
These veggies may be one of our most misunderstood foods. Fried or doused in sour cream, they're not going to help you lose weight. But when boiled or baked, a potato's starch absorbs water and swells. Once chilled, portions of the starch crystallize into a form that resists digestion known as resistant starch. Unlike other types of fiber, resistant starch gets fermented in the large intestine, creating fatty acids that may block the body's ability to burn carbohydrates. In their place, you burn fat.
A healthy potato serving is about the size of a fist.
But it's a carb-bomb that spikes your blood sugar and you end up burning THAT rather than fat!

    4.) Cheese
Slim-Down Effect: Great source of calcium, which burns calories and fat
At about 100 calories and 5 g of fat per ounce, cheese usually tops the no-no list, but its calcium improves your ability to burn calories and fat, according to a recent research review. Not getting enough of this mineral may trigger the release of calcitriol, a hormone that causes the body to store fat. Scientists at the University of Tennessee found that people on a reduced-calorie diet who included an extra 300 to 400 mg of calcium a day lost significantly more weight than those who ate the same number of calories but with less calcium. Scientists aren't exactly sure why, but eating calcium-rich foods is more effective than taking calcium supplements—and cheese has about 200 mg per ounce.
Just stick to 2-ounce portions, and choose light varieties to get health benefits for half the calories.
Better - BUT... screw the light varieties, they taste like plastic and do you no favors. Decent real cheese is the only way to go.

    5.) Dark chocolate
Slim-Down Effect: Satisfies a common craving to prevent bingeing
Up to 97% of women experience cravings, and chocolate is the most common and “intensely” craved food, according to a recent study. Having an occasional small serving of a favorite treat is better than depriving yourself, which may lead to a binge, says Greaves. In fact, people who tried to not think about chocolate ate two-thirds more of it than people who were told to talk about it freely, British research found.
Dark varieties are more satisfying than milk chocolate, say scientists at the University of Copenhagen, but measure your portion, and be mindful when you eat. Slowly savoring one or two squares of a high-quality dark chocolate bar will satisfy a craving more than wolfing down M&M's in front of the TV.
Talking about chocolate, and EATING it, are two different things! It's also one of those foods - like nuts - that a lot of people have a serious issue with portion control.

Shame on Prevention for this article. It's going to make a lot of people hungry, fat, and unhappy.

Its just sad that they print that kind of garbage. But I like cheese and dark chocolate just fine. The rest will blow you up to be the size, well I was. That's one reason why I always tell people how I lost weight when they ask. I don't know how many people they'll ask the same question to. I did see someone loose a lot at WW, so it happens for some people. I was hungry the whole time I did WW. This was better. I think Atkins is the secret the food industry wants to hide. They are putting corn syrup in everything so people will overeat the stuff. They know why they are adding the sugar, so people will overeat. But junk is cheap, it takes time to grow real meat and veggies. If all people ate as we do, over half of the store would disappear. In the end, I think they worry more over that than they do my health.

My starting weight was 235 lbs and I'm trying to get to 130 lbs.

            3rd mini goal:135!
            4th mini goal: 130!

I drink coffee. I drink when I am thirsty. I am just a low carber. Not on Atkins at all!!! He has everything to do with my weightloss and nothing to do with it, depending on who you ask.

The best thing about that article is reading the comments by readers at the bottom of the page. People don't believe the garbage the so-called experts have been spouting for years. Chocolate? Pasta? Bread? And Potatoes? Why not wash it all down with a Mountain Dew!!! All that article needs is a good advertisement on it like this one:

Ok, now I'm thinking about angus beef, and that makes me hungry. Perhaps if I talk about it, I'll be less likely to eat it?

(it's getting on lunchtime, and I have to admit, I wish I'd made myself a hamburger patty for lunch today)

And after all those "nice" carbs, prepare youself for a nap.

I do NOT miss the tired/foggy feeling I used to always have.

That was one of the things that ran me off from cheating at buffets. I've gotten so tired, I went to sleep in my car in parking lots, unable to drive home! I think its been at least a year since that happened to me.

So funny that you posted this because I lurk on a fitness board where this was posted today. Many of the people on the board do what's called "clean eating," which, from what I can tell, seems to share some big similarities with Atkins.

Or so I thought. Everyone on that board is chiming in about how true this article is, blah blah blah. It's taking some willpower on my part not to respond.

Edited to add: I am about halfway through the comments following the article and am heartened to see how many people realize what bollocks it is.

My DH likes that mag, and I swear I can't get half way through it because it strikes me as such nonsense sometimes.

"SUCH AND SUCH VITAMIN WILL CURE EVERYTHING!!!" is a common theme.
