  • What is the nut situation?

Hi, can anyone explain what snacks i can incorporate in to my daily diet ie nuts, seeds and any other items you can recommend?

I am a snacker who is in the early stages of my diet and am looking for a variety of foods to keep me going between meals.

I want to gradually stop snacking but i think it will help my cravings in the first few days.

Any help will be very much appriceated.

You do not want to stop snacking. It keeps your metabolism and blood sugar in balance. What you want is to eat the right snacks!
For Induction, I rely on celery with cream chees, and pork rinds. Also, avocado. You can eat 1/2 of an avocado every day in Induction. Mash some up with a little salsa, a drop of lime, some salt, and dip your pork rinds in the guacamole!

The first thing I add going into OWL is macademia nuts. These are your best friend when it comes to overcoming cravings, or just holding out til your next meal. Eat only a few, like 6-8, very slowly.
After that, as fars as nuts and seeds go, I'd stick to raw pecans, walnuts and almonds. Their net carbs are very low, with good fats and lots of fiber. But keep the quantities small, because it is easy to eat too many.
Skip peanuts altogether. If you absolutely have to have them, wait til you are up a few rungs on OWL, because for many people peanuts stall weight loss. They are not a nut, but a legume--like kidney or pinto beans. Very starchy.

Have you read the book? Nuts and seeds are only to be included after induction. they are also very limited on Atkins - if you start to eat nuts and seeds as snacks in addition to your normal diet - Atkins turns into Fatkins.

You can snack on meat and vegetables with fat.

I don't think snacking is a great thing as a habit. Mindless eating should be avoided. Don't eat when you drive, watch TV or sit in front of the computer. Eat with a purpose.
Drink water all those other times.

I encourage you to get familiar with the list of acceptable induction foods if, that is, you are still in your 14 day induction. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html

        My favorite snacks:
broccoli florets, green pepper strips, green onions, jicama with caesar or other dressing
        deviled eggs
celery sticks with cream cheese and black olive spread
thinly sliced turkey rolled up with cream cheese and a pickle spear
olives (no more than 20 per day)
        pickles
jalapenos stuffed with cheese wrapped with bacon and broiled
shrimp wrapped with bacon and broiled

Pork rinds were problematic for me. I tend to eat the whole bag for one... and portiion control is one of my goals. Ditto for guacamole as well as salsa. I'll just sit there with the bowl and spoon and poof it's all gone LOL Needless to say, the sodium overload causes me to stall out on weight loss and even gain some. Each person is different. Find what works for you and when the weight starts to shed, just keep doing whatever that is.

It takes a while to start eating nuts. I spent a little over 14 days on induction, then went to OWL by adding 5 carbs of veggies. I spent a couple weeks on 25 carbs heavy in veggies, and started really feeling good. I went to the nut rung... and overate, gained weight. Folks here suggested I measure out the nuts into one ounce portions. Today I know what an ounce of nuts looks like, but it really took a while.

It's a journey. Welcome to the fora.

They are an OWL Rung 3 food though, according to Dr. Atkins.

As Liv wrote and as you already know, mindless snacking is a bad habit. Having a snack because you actually need a snack... that's fine.

I got it on Amazon, second hand. This is the one you want:

Or if you PM Elizellen, I think she said she sometimes has copies that she picks up whenever she sees them in charity shops.

What's the source or evidence for this for those following a low-carb diet? In my experience (and review of research) the reason people feel the need to constantly snack or eat "six small meals" a day is because they have poor insulin regulation, and they suffer from low blood sugar. If someone detunes the number of carbs eaten, there really is no need to "not stop snacking" because insulin levels remain in check, and no one feels the need to have a snack. One should eat when hungry, and only enough to no longer be hungry. Here are a few links that I have bookmarked:

From an Atkins perspective, Dr. Atkins doesn't advocate "snacking." Rather, he says don't go more than 6 hours without eating. For many of us, those are just meals. Ketosis does wonders for not feeling a need to constantly snack and keep our bodies in a perpetual state of insulin release (however small).

                    ^^^

When you do get to the nut rung, there are some healthier choices. Not all nuts are equal. Macadamia nuts are king, but almonds and pecans are also good choices. I am a big fan of almonds roasted in olive oil and sprinkled with a little splenda and a lot of cayenne pepper.

Most charity shops I have been in have had a copy on the shelf - it would also be worth asking the volunteers to check the back room as they often, assuming that people will not buy an 'old out-of-date diet book', put them straight into the 'discard' box
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
