  • Nuts lead to food allergy?

I love almonds and all other types of nuts. I sometimes wonder will eating too many nuts lead to nut allergy or intolerance????

What is "too many nuts"? A serving of nuts is 1 ounce.

I hear you there about the love. I don't think most can eat their way into a nut allergy, but I do believe you can eat your way back into obesity with nuts. I am definitely trying not to do that. Some days I am more successful than others.

Depends on what school of allergy thought you belong too...One theory is that if you constantly expose yourself to an allergy-causing agent (an allergen), you can develop the allergy. Another theory is that if you constantly expose yourself to an allergen, you develop resistance to it and won't become allergic.

The take home message from that is : eat in moderation and eat a variety of foods.

I work in the medical field and see so many patients with BAD nut allergy's. I guess I believe in the school of thought, if you constantly expose yourself to an allergen, it eventually will lead to an allergy. For example, people on my job use latex gloves everyday. Some of us develop a latex allergy and we have to use different gloves. So in theory, if nuts are eaten daily maybe I would eventually become allergic to it. This is just me over-thinking, theorizing and being paranoid. But was just curious as to what you guys thought. Yes, I agree, everything in moderation and variety is best!

And in theory, you won't become allergic because you will develop a tolerance to the allergen due to constant exposure. They still do desensitization for antibiotic allergy by giving the allergic person constant controlled exposure to the antibiotic. So if you give yourself 1 ounce of nuts daily (constant controlled exposure) then you can desensitize yourself to the nut allergen, preventing allergic reactions to it.

But your best bet is variety.

I hear you, Kent! The "love" thing is my problem, rather than the allergy thing. Nuts are amazing for taste and health, and as long as I limit myself to an ounce of natural almonds per day, I'm fine. But it is sooooo easy for me to overdo it. Salted nuts are completely out - I become temporarily insane when I eat them. I can (and have) finished an enitre container in one day.

When I added nuts back, I added them in the form of flours... or in recipes (sunflower seeds in a salad, endives with walnuts, meatballs with cashews, etc.). I thought it was easier to prevent overeating them that way.

I did the same thing with nuts, yogurt, berries, booze, and the other rung foods. Adding them as ingredients in another dish rather than as the main event aided in portion control.
