  • New Atkins for a New You - anyone have it?

I'm desperate to read it but it's so unfair - it doesn't come out in the UK for another couple of weeks I've even tried to buy it on eBook but it's restricted and won't let us Brits get our hands on it!

Re: New Atkins for a New You - anyone have it?

Buying a book on a diet always make me feel like I do when I buy a membership to a gym - I have done my part I paid for it now you guys deliver the "new me"
But I guess that is not going to happen

I am not sure what the major difference is. The book is not doing cups of veggies but rather net carbs which they recommend eating 12-15 carb. And there are some things allowed on this NewU plan that is not allowed according to 2002

They threw in a special category on OWL to add in milk and soft cheesed (rung 5 - after berries. And yes they use the word rung )
And a special OWL level for adding back some vegetable based juices (like tomato) this is rung 7 After legumes but before fruits.

It is still recognizable Atkins stuff though

I love it. I think it is written well and really helps people make a plan that is right for them and make an Atkins lifestyle.

I love that the carb counter for veggies in cups specifies cooked amounts. I think it makes it easier for some.

I've ordered mine from Amazon this morning and it's shipped from the UK. The uk_depository_books has them cheaper than the "regular" Amazon price.

Re: New Atkins for a New You - anyone have it?

I read it and liked it. Much more user friendly and easy to understand for people new to low carb WOE. IF any of the critics of LC do actually read it I don't see how they can continue their bashing arguments. It seemed the mention of getting carbs from veggies was mentioned everywhere so I don't see how they can say Atkins is a no carb diet.

I have not verified the carb counts in the food lists. The Induction list looks pretty much the same to me with things like string beans clarified. Recipes look very good and I like the suggested menus grouped by phase and after Induction, by carb range. All real food natural stuff that you make yourself. Later rungs/phases mention store-bought products like low carb tortillas and such.

I liked Dr. Atkins scientific explanations in DANDR though but that's just me. I also am very grateful for his detailed supplement recommendations which are not covered in the new book other than the no iron multi and EFA.

I hope this book helps to bring Atkins into a favorable light. I know I'm biased but I can't see how critics can poke holes in it. A USA Today review by two doctors put down Atkins and the new book because you could not have potatoes, apples and whole grain bread on day 1. The other doctor feels that Atkins is just a convoluted way of counting calories which in his opinion is THE only way to lose weight. Pretty weak arguments against Atkins IMO.

I need to re-read the new book more thoroughly. There are some things I need to ponder more.

ETA: I very much liked the recommendations for vegetarians, vegans and various ethnic groups. I think that will be helpful in bringing in a larger group of people to Atkins.

Not that I saw at all. I did not see them in the suggested menus and the mention I remember was in the Maintenance chapter in a chart suggesting better choices for common items such as candy bars, bakery muffins, etc.

I was very surprised and thrilled to see that the suggestions for meals, desserts and snacks are real food items that the average person would actually eat. There are some very good ideas and recipes.

I love the OWL breakfast options.. Recipes right there.. Almost Muesli, granola topped cheese, Smoothies that you can make...

I really think that this book is going to appeal to so many more people and seem soo less diety to people.

I have skimmed and am now going deeper...

                      .
There are suggestions to use bars as snacks in the induction menus in the book. Or to drink low carb shake with your breakfast. But I did not get the feeling that frankenfoods were pushed either.

The already existing Atkins carb counter had that.

Sources like Fitday and Fatsecret and the USDA have that.

And why someone wants to measure their food after it's been cooked (when I've handled in the "raw") escapes me ... it's hot, for one thing ... and won't stay hot if I now have to measure it!

I think it is easier for people to think of it that way. Especially if you are cooking for a family. It is easier to make a bag of spinach and then scoop one cooked cup on your plate than to measure it first, cook it in a separate pot and then have to clean two pots for the same vegetable.

I think it is awesome that they have taken into account how real people eat and have made it so it does not seem like more work to the person trying Atkins for the first time.

And it certainly doesn't hurt your love of the book that you're a success story in it either.

Come on.. Really? So what? Am I talking about me? No.. I am talking about the book. I have all the books. I am an Atkins supporter like you.

I am honored to be in the book but to be honest, It still would have bought it and been thrilled to see what was in it. I have never waited to get more Atkins books.

I did not bring that up once. And I would not have.
