Depends on the nutrition info and the ingredients. If you have a question about a specific item such as a bottled, boxed or canned item that most people do not have hanging around their kitchen, please post that info.
If the ingredients are on the acceptable food list you have been provided with, generally it is ok.

Walmart.com: Great Value: Sugar Free Chocolate Flavored Syrup, 18.5 oz: Baking

The above link shows the nutritional information for WalMart's sugar free syrup. It lists 4 grams of carbs, 1 gram of fiber and no sugars.

      I'm not sure exactly how 4 minus 1 = 0

It is sweetened with Splenda, however, the third ingredient is Sorbitol. Not sure how that figures into Atkins.

Sorbitol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The above reference is from Wikipedia regarding Sorbitol. Of particular concern are possible links to diabetic neuropathy and retinopathy.

I couldn't find a reference to Sorbitol in DANDR.

Being a diabetic and realizing the connections to two of the worst effects of diabetes I would avoid it.

One other concern, if you go out of your way to appease personal cravings for sweets, with artificial sweetners, I believe you work to promote the continuation of the cravings. For me, chocolate is just evil and should be avoided, or I will end up back in my co-worker's candy dish.

(The morning I decided to recommit to Atkins, he chose to refill his cany dish with top-of-the-line chocolates. Every time I enter or exit my cubicle my nose passes over the bowl. So far, I haven't given in and don't plan to! It's been 5 or 6 weeks chocolate free! )

I would say during Induction the best course is to avoid "sweet" totally. Once into OWL and beyond, I think Mother Nature has better alternatives for sweetners like low Glycemic fruits and a few vegetables (sweet onions, peppers, etc.)

I agree with forbey. Just because they are "low carb" treats, it doesn't mean they're still not treats. Treats are for special occasions, and minor treats are for weekends. It's best to eat clean...trust me, i learned this the wrong way :/

The above reference to a thread by Atkinsgal08 discussed the sie effects, or more correctly the "back effects" of Sorbitol and other sugar alcohols.

            Quite enlightening!

              Re: SugarFree Chocolate Syrup

              Heather,
One of the ingredients of the chocolate syrup in the link Forbey provided is caramel color: ((high dextrose corn syrup---NOT ALLOWED on ATKINS)--and cocoa. Cocoa is not allowed on Induction, although some people use it for desserts. But that's a whole other discussion.

So as I posted to you last night, you have to read BOTH your ingredient and nutrition labels. Especially when they substitute words for sugar.

Use the search tool above and read the Stickies in the Forums above. Somewhere there is a list that show some of the words used instead of sugar. These are all great tools you should become familiar with.

What is the caloric value of Caramel Color?

Although high dextrose corn syrup is the main component in the manufacture of Caramel Colors, the resulting material generally has a low caloric value. This is so because during the manufacturing process the dextrose polymerize with the reactants to form color. The color components are virtually unabsorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and are thus not biologically available. The remaining caloric value of Caramel Colors can be attributed to unreacted sugars that remain after manufacture.
Specific caloric values are listed on the Sethness Nutritional Composition Data sheets.

Here is the RULE (Ok I made up this rule but I think it should be a rule) SUGAR FREE does NOT mean ATKINS legal. Eat your eggs, meat, fish, oils and veggies. Drink water. That is what works. And if you want to be think you have to work it.

                  Re: SugarFree Chocolate Syrup

I use the SF Chocolate Syrup for making chocolate mousse. It's about 3 tablespoons for the 8 servings. The mousse helps with my chocolate cravings and it doesn't cause me to stall.
