  • Need Some Advice PLEASE!!!!

    Good Morning Friends,

It's been awhile since I've updated my status here or have been here on a regular basis. I've been in a bit of a funk and I need some advice. Most of the people here I've found very supportive and caring so i'm reaching out to you.

I've recently gone through some health issues, and it has derailed my atkins way of life. I had lost a little more than a hundred lbs in under a year on this way of eating, and I consider one of the best things I have ever done for myself. In late februaury I started experiencing an irregular heartbeat. It started a sa bit of an annoyance, and after about a week, it progressed to the point where I needed to see a doctor. I was never in any pain, just the weird feeling of palpatations, and weakness. I went to the dr, and he ran an EKG which didn't show anything right of the bat, but he ordered some blood tests and asked me to wear a holtor monitor for 24 hrs. (it's like a portable EKG)

I took the blood tests and wore the monitor, and my results were mixed. The blood tests were mostly good, except for my cholesterol. Here are my results
    Component Your Value Standard Range CHOLESTEROL 243 <239- mg/dL TRIGLYCERIDE 61 <199- mg/dL HDL 34 >40- mg/dL LDL CALCULATED 197 <129- mg/dL
I was shocked to find that my bad cholesterol was so high. Immediately my wife and Doctor wanted to blame my diet, but I thought that was a rush to judgment. The truth of the matter is we can't say specifically that the diet is the cause. I've never had a Lipid profile done before so my high cholesterol could be hereditary, we don't know. In fact, I was in such poor shape before that my cholesterol level has probably dropped since being on this WOE.

Immediately my doctor wanted to put me on hardcore cholesterol medicine, and I refused. I told him, even if you say Atkins could be causing my high cholesterol, shouldn't i be given the chance to follow his recommended healthy diet to try and lower my numbers? Why are we so reliant on prescription meds to make us healthy? So since the beginning of March I have been on A whole grain, low fat diet. My wife was all over me to change my eating, and I have done that, and I am maintaining my weight pretty well, I am currently around 280.

I really would like to go back to Atkins and take of the rest of this extra weight, because I can tell you right now, although I am not packing weight back on, i know I am not going to be losing it either.

The Holtor monitor results did show some irregularities, so the Dr. ordered a echocardiogram of my heart (ultrasound image) I had to wait a week for the results which was torture. But in that week, whatever problem I had seemed to disappear as quickly as it had arrived. One day I woke up feeling like myself again. This was the second week of March, and I've felt great ever since. The Echocardiogram revealed a normal functioning and healthy heart. So I'm not sure what to think! My Dr. still wants me on meds, and I told him know, that I would give this new diet a few months and see what it did for my cholesterol levels.

I know that my wife wants me to follow the dr. advice, but I just don't know what to do.

Has anyone else here been in this same sort of position? Any advice would be appreciated. I feel like I achieved so much, and I don't want to jeopardize that, but my health has to come first.

    Help.

If the negative effects were due to the diet and everyone reacts differently so maybe it was, I would follow a lower carb but not such an intense low carb as atkins. Stick to whole grains, no healthy eating incorporates junk food as a required part of plan so avoid sugars, flour etc.

I've dealt with irregular heartbeats, racing heart, angina etc for years and I did have a reoccurance recently but since I had problems long before Atkins I don't think this WOE has anything to do with it for me. Very well could effect you though.

Since you didn't have pre atkins readings on your cholesterol you are right they could be much better now than then for all you know. Eat healthy and you shouldn't gain. You dont' have to do Atkins forever to keep it off (though many disagree), you just have to make sure you don't return to old eating habits. If you are eating healthy natural foods you're not going to get fat again.

My Dad was diagnosed with Atrial Fibrillation last June. A racing heartbeat, but it could get irregular, causing the blood to pool - and then pumping out, which caused the feeling of weird heart palpitations. He was extremely tired beforehand, and ended up being off work for a good 10 weeks because of it.

This is not diet related, and it's not uncommon either.

He's on warfarin (rat poison) and some other medications now that seem to be controlling it.

I also wonder if it's hereditary, because I think I feel the same weird heart palpitations where the blood pools and then pumps out. I've always had it though, and the only way I can explain how it feels is like when you knew you were going to be in trouble at home as a little kid, or something scared you really badly.

Without knowing what your lipid panel was before, all you can do is wait another month to 3 months and check it again. Whila anomalies are always present, the preponderance of the scientific data does not support the claim that low carb eating would raise your lipids. That and the length of time you had been on atkins before the symptoms started would be indicative of some other change, stress or influence.

But, then again, I'm not a Dr. and us non-doctors don't know nothing!

first off congrats on the great job you are doing morphing your body to the healtheir you. What rung of OWL were you on when this happened? Were you doing the mandatory exercise part of your atkins cause your HDL should be going up too from that part.

call your doc ands ask for a complete lipid panel based on your new diet and see what is going on cause you are going to see your atkins benefits are gone and it would help your doc to see how your atkins was helping you. Did you know Dr Atkins was a cardiologist?

More research has been done on LDL cholesterol and it is now known that there are several different kinds of lippoproteins labeled as LDL. VLDL are the ones docs worry about. particle A known as the fluffy kind as what most low carbers are making and they are not the dangerous kind docs worry about at all. it used to be thought that 1/5th of our triglycerides were VLDLs and that was why 1/5 of that total is added to the LDL and HDL to get the total cholesterol. yours are very healthy levels and 1/5th of them would be 12 which if that was your VLDL then you would be a very healthy Cholesterol person.

I'm sure your doc did a blood chemistry test and looked at your potassium levels too but are you using any potassium supplements either OTC or a salt substitute cause having either too much or too littel potassium can effect heart beats.

did he test your thyroid to see if you have any issues with that cause too much thyroid hormone can cause those nasty heart palipations too. I get them when they are adjusting my Thyroid meds and they give me too much for hypo folk they are called begnien but for hyer folk they are an issue.

What 2Big said. What about following Atkins with a slightly different tact meaning eat more lean meats, poultry and fish/seafood as opposed to frequent fatty cuts. Limit fatty meats like pork bacon and sausage and reduce saturated fats like butter. Use more olive oil and eat avocado to get some good fats in. Watch amounts of dairy fats (cheeses, yogurt, etc.) and maybe scale back if you use a lot of these products.

2Big is really the expert here and hopefully will chime in on the above. I started doing Atkins this way when my cholesterol levels were still unacceptable. A recent check shows them coming down quite a bit since making these changes. I'm hoping they will be much better on my next appointment in July.

Just my thoughts on what I tried. I did NOT want to go back to low fat/low calorie/low taste eating. I really believe Atkins is the way to go...sometimes you have to adjust the acceptable foods to help various health problems though.

I'm 30 years old and have had an irregular heartbeat for 10 years. PVCS, PACS.... and I also have normal ekgs and echos. My advice to you is to make sure and get enough magnesium and potassium because a shortage of either can cause abnormal beats. Research what foods are diet friendly and high in both of these things. My cardio actually recommended this diet to control my hearts abnormal beats! Your cholesetrol WILL go down as you progess on this diet!!

your doctor is full of crap puting you on a whole grain low fat diet? what the **** was he thinking? what ever good cholestoral you had from the year of eating atkins could now very likely be gone if you have been eating this way for many months

but don't worry you can start atkins again and get it back

YouTube - Exposing the Cholesterol Myth

Cholesterol is NOT the Cause of Heart Disease 5/28/05

1.5 Million More People to Be Prescribed Useless Cholesterol Drugs

Does High Cholesterol REALLY Cause Heart Disease

don't ever take cholestoral lowering meds they are horrible

and to make your wife happy before you restart atkins get a full pannel cholestoral test remember it must be a full pannel

then go back on atkins and 6 months later get another full pannel cholestoral test and it must be a full pannel and you will see your cholestoral will get much better

also you should know people who eat traditional diets have great health and lets take eskimos for example who eat a diet of up to 80% fat and tons of saturated animal fats

out of all of them who eat there native diet they have 0% heart disease, 0% type 2 diabetes, 0% obesity

while 40% or 50% of americans will die or suffer from a heart attack

really do you think the average doctors have any idea what they are doing? 40-50% compared to 0%?

If OP doesn't agree with his Dr. he should seek another Dr. But I would advise against getting your medical advice from a message board. Suggestions are one thing. To tell someone don't take this med and don't follow your Dr. advice at all, do this instead, is another.
