  • AARRRGH! Sabotaged!

Got home last night, late, hungry and tired.

Blood sugar before dinner was 149.

Sat down to a plate of browned hamburger with cheese melted on top, fixed by my lovely wife.

Got up this morning and my fasting BG was 186. I asked her what she put in the burger. She said Chipolte Seasoning (quite yummy). I checked out the label. It says ZERO CARBS... As I read the ingredients, I found the usual suspects dextrose, malto dextrine, high fructose corn syrup. As I looked closer some of the other ingredients contained molasses, wheat, and other sources of carbs.

    How frustrating is that.

I can't blame my wife, she has been doing her best to stick to the plan with me, and I was the one who ate it.

But, it is a hard lesson the swallow...(pun intended!)

No need to "start over" ... you just keep moving forward.

No need to start over, unfortunately I wasn't aware that I had slipped until this mornings fasting blood glucose readings. By lunch my blood sugars were down to 114.

Sitting here trying to force feed myself some chicken breast, a couple of hard boiled eggs and some cheese. Problem is I have no appetite. It is a terrible thing to realize after 52 years of using eating as the solution to EVERYTHING, that now, I'm never hungry!

If you liked the flavor of the seasoning, read the ingredients to see what herbs and spices they used, make up your own, no-sugar added, spice mix. I often mix up my own spice mixtures because if they aren't tossing in sugar, they're tossing in ALOT of salt. Just be sure to label your mix and put how many carbs per teaspoon it contains. Then you're ready to go.

            Here's a link to a Chipolte Seasoning:
            Southwest Chipotle Seasoning - 162886 - Recipezaar

Rather than using the generic "chili powder" because they sometimes contain added sugar, try to find the dried ancho and/or pasilla peppers (I see them in the international aisle of my grocery stores), toast them in a dry skillet until they turn a lighter shade of red, cool them and grind them in a spice grinder (AKA a coffee grinder). And then mix with a paprika (read the labels!!!!)

Don't be timid to play around with these spice mixtures. Increase and/or decrease the amounts to suit your taste. You'll create a mixture that is truly unique. And who knows? You might be able to market your own spice mixes. If I recall correctly the Hidden Valley Ranch dressing was a family recipe that the guests liked so much, they would take bottles home as 'gifts'. Then the HVR people started marketing it, and now it competes with knock-offs.

                  Re: AARRRGH! Sabotaged!

Another fine moment in the life of a fat old man!

Made it to lunch, tested my before meal blood sugar... It was 114!

Never have I been able to see such rapid results in getting my BG down. It's absolutely amazing.

For those out there wondering about the benefits of Atkins... I be it!

Forbey, my mother in law is diabetic and she absolutely always sticks to her diet-no cheating at all- and her sugar sometimes spikes in the morning to about 146. Doctor told her that her body is converting stored fat to sugar over night and not to worry as long as it comes down later in the a.m. You may be showing the same thing to some degree with your own sugar levels.

Thanks, Chinadoll, sometimes when something different happens it can seem like it is isolated to just you. I'm sure it is not just me. Today has been a "no-cheat" day, so we will see what tomorrow morning brings.

Why ruin a good piece of meat with that crap? I'll never understand.
