I loved that one Nice spin.
Yes Dr. Atkins was right - we know that - what is taking the medical community so long is a riddle. But I think the crisis with obesity in Europe lately have made researches look at other culprits than fat
    I loved this quote
“The official advice for losing weight, controlling diabetes and reducing the risk of heart disease is to eat what is known as a ‘healthy balanced diet’. “This means keep your fat intake low but make sure you get a good amount of carbohydrates like pasta, bread and potatoes. Unfortunately that allows you to consume a lot of high-glycaemic foods. In fact it’s perfectly possible to follow a ‘healthy balanced diet’ and consume the equivalent of 60 teaspoons of sugar a day, which is not good.”

What a wonderful article; thank you for posting it. I still think modern nutrition is fueled by the big food companies and maybe even the pharmaceutical companies. The big food companies won't make huge profits if people eat healthy foods like veggies and other whole foods and the drug companies won't make money if we stop getting sick from the packaged foods.

There does seem to be a trend starting to eat healthier, unfortunately with the "guidance" of agencies like the USDA, people are going about it the wrong way.

We need more articles like this to hit the news feeds!!!

It's not a riddle to me.

Take a look at the Canada Food Guide and you'll have solved the riddle, too.
Eating Well with Canada's Food Guide - Main Page

The article asks the question - "Could low-fat diets have actually been causing heart disease and obesity?" - but does not answer it, directly at least. There is a reason for that- the same reason why the cause of the obesity/diabetes epidemic is taking so long to be "cured".

The medical "system" was desperately seeking the cause of the increase in obesity back in the '60's and '70's. It made common sense that eating fat would make one fat, so that's the "leap of faith" that the system made. So medical advice was given to that effect - eat a low-fat diet and control your weight by controlling your caloric intake.

But after the gospel was preached and followed religiously, the epidemic only got worse. And it has gotten so bad that the truth can no longer be ignored. It's too expensive in lives and money to support what is now being proven to be a myth.

The problem for "the system" is that it is in fact the cause of the obesity epidemic, because of its low-fat/high-carbohydrate recommendations ............... and they know it. There could very well be a tremendous financial and political price to be paid for that error, as well as a tremendious loss of reputation and public confidence.

Here's my own recent experience with "the system".

        Male; age 60; 6'6"; Day 206; 301\228/225

Three weeks ago I went to the doctor to discuss the results of blood tests that were made just a few days before. He had not seen me since I began my Atkins-like diet last October.

When the doctor walked into the examining room he was dumbfounded at what he saw - a thin me. He immediately asked what I was eating for breakfast, lunch and dinner. When I answered him, he merely shook his head in near disbelief.

Then he looked at my blood results and, again, the same reaction. He said that the results could not be any better. My BP was very good.

He asked if I would excuse him for a moment. I said fine and he left the room.

A few seconds later, he and a female colleage entered the room. The doctor introduced the woman as a person who arranged and conducted seminars for obese patients of the various doctors in the medical practice. The doctor asked me if it was OK if the woman asked me some questions and I said that that would be just fine.

She then looked at my test results and asked essentially the same questions as the doctor.

        In short, she was astounded.

She asked if I would be willing to talk to the nutritionist who gave dietary advice at the seminars and would I be willing to tell my experience at a "clinic" that was being given in the near future.

        I said "no problem".

To make a long story short, I never heard from anybody about anything and I think I know why. After I left the doctor's office, the woman "woke up" and realized that I would tell people to ignore the advice that they had been receiving for years from the people giving the seminar, as well as their doctors and other "health care professionals". She could not allow that to happen.

Folks, "the system" is scared shitless that the public is going to realize that they've been lied to for decades. "The system" will, knowingly or unknowingly, do everything in it's considerable power to prevent that from happening. This is why the truth is taking so long to come out. The truth is now its enemy.

Make no mistake about it, the siege mentality is in full force.

I agree with this. I also think that doctors themselves don't want to believe that what they were taught in school was wrong and that they've been passing along that bad information. There is a general belief in the infallibility of science, or at least a desire to believe in its infallibility.

Moreover, I think that many medical professionals think it's intuitive that eating fat = getting fat. I mean, it sounds like it's logical, right? The problem is that science is constantly evolving. We've only known about "good" cholesterol for what, a decade or so? I've read a statistic in several places that it takes the medical establishment something like 17 years to come around to adopt a new practice as mainstream after it's been introduced, so the idea that doctors would refuse to reject conventional wisdom doesn't surprise me at all.

I hear what you guys are saying. (And I have read Thomas Kuhn's The Structures Scientific Revolutions.)
But it has been a long time since the first diet revolution came out - 1972. Atkins' general viewpoints were right then. They are still right today and yet sugar has escaped scrutiny for all this time. But I really do think it is turning. We are seeing more and more of this kind of information hit the media.
I celebrated this article today and had salad for breakfast - no white toast, no jam, no orange juice. Just salad with nuts, cheese and berries.
