I think that since this is an Atkins "by the book" forum and since Dr Atkins himself was not a supporter of the frankenfoods in his 2002 version of his book, the point is a moot one.

There is, however, a forum at ADBB for people who are not following Atkins at this site, and I highly encourage anyone who is interested in not following Atkins to visit that forum.

    Again, just my 2-carbs' worth.

The point isn't whether frankenfoods WORK, in other words. It's whether our bodies were meant to subsist on them for the good of our overall health. Dr Atkins said "no".

Ok things do not need to get nasty. That being said, the frankenfoods were created by Dr A because he heard so much greif from people about this WOE being to hard in our fast paced life. He also said they were only for emergencies. The Atkins folk who are now selling these nasty little goodies are in it for the money. They claim that several food are acceptable for induction when they simply are not. My DH eats them and has been stuck for over a month.

                  totally. I always say:
Its the job of these low carb companies to make DOLLAHZ($$$$$$$)
Its OUR job to lose/maintain and be healthy (including developing healthy habits)

The two do not go hand in hand.

By "frankenfoods" do you mean any low-carb advertised product? I eat Arnold's low carb bread. I love it. I also like a spoonful of Carb Options peanut butter in the afternoon. I use Dreamfields pasta occasionally. I use Carb Options garlic marinade. I use 4C carb controlled bread crumbs.

As for shakes or bars, I don't eat anything that has sugar alcohols in it.

                      Anyway, 40 pounds gone. :icondance

Many of the low-carb products contain ingredients which are not acceptable for Atkins and are not conducive to weight loss. Like anything else in life, you need to use common sense. Read the label, and if it contains ingredients you shouldn't be eating pass it by. I have used some of the LC products since I completed induction such as the low-carb tortillas and carb-down flatbread and haven't had any problems, but these products are to be used in moderation and not daily. Include too many of the low-carb products in your diet and your weight loss will stall. This has been shown to be true over and over by people on this board. Hope this helps.

I am editing this to say that products that contain sugar alkahols can be tolerated by some people and they will stall some people. If you find that you are one of the people for whom they cause problems, you will need to include the sugar alkahol count in your daily carb count.

                          I'll bite.

For me, the answer is "yes", but...

                          ... and I mean BUT...

... it depends on the frankenfood and the quantity.

I know I can take a Advantage bar a day and still lose weight. I can take a cup of Atkins Endulge Ice cream a day and still lose weight. Having both on the same day will stall me.

Since frankenfood products are few and very expensive where I live, I'm not exposed to them as much.

The negativity around them is due to the simple fact that some frankenfoods are made with ingredients, like sugar alcohols, that are known to stall or slow down weight loss.

Can some people eat them and still lose weight? Sure and if it works for them--go for it.

The problem arises with people who cannot lose weight eating those foods and then blame the diet, itself, for not losing rather than eliminating the problematic foods. See, for some reason people have a tendency to think that if the packaged says "low carb" it's automatically good for them and they can eat it without any adverse effects on their weight loss diet.

It's really interesting from a psychological point of view because in the weight loss phases of Atkins, the rule is if a food causes blood sugar instability symptoms and/or causes a slow down or halts weight loss, you are to drop that food. For some people, it's mentally easier for them to accept that 5 net carbs of cantaloupe can cause cravings or slow down their weight loss, than it is for them to accept that a product labeled "low carb with only 2 net carbs (and 30 grams of sugar alcohols) can too. The advertizing and marketing executives have done their jobs well.

                            editing to add
As alluded to upthread, some of these low carb foods are not acceptable for certain phases of the Atkins diet. For example, low carb bread made with grain products are not allowed during Induction because the bread contains grains---which are not allowed on the Induction phase. But the same bread can be perfectly "legal" for someone on OWL or Pre-Maintenance. Again, if your body can tolerate the food and that carbohydrate level, then you can choose to eat or not to eat.

The other "problem" with the low carb foods is that some of them are highly processed and highly refined. Since his first book in 1972, Dr. Atkins was very adamant that eating minimally processed and refined foods were crucial to good nutrition and good health. In other words, if you eat crap, your health and nutrition are crap too. But again, it's your decision as to what you want to put into your body....

as much as I've noticed, young and physically extra-active men can have those with no problems. not too much though, even then.

and you know, don't be nasty to other people, it never pays off :guns .
