  • DANDR Reading Group Chapter IV-- "Is This You?"

Could you apply some of yourself to each of the three groups Atkins mentions in this chapter(A, B, C), or more than one? If so, where do you find yourself saying, "that's me!"?

Which of the three groups he mentions (A, B, C) probably fits you best overall?

Why is 'compulsive eating' a phenomenon known mainly to carbohydrate-filled diets?

What are some ways you keep from eating compulsively (especially if it has become habit from earlier dieting experiences away from Atkins), either learned from the book, ADBB or in your experience?

From Group A: I know part of my weight problem is hereditary. Thanks mom!
I do feel hungry a lot on low-fat diets, and when I feel full I've eaten too much on them.

From Group B: YES (to all of them. *LOL*)

From Group C: Yes to pizza and Diet Coke

Which of the three groups he mentions (A, B, C) probably fits you best overall?

    Definitely B Group.

Why is 'compulsive eating' a phenomenon known mainly to carbohydrate-filled diets?

I think it's because our blood sugars are so unstable that it causes us to be 'hungry' even when our bodies don't need the fuel.

What are some ways you keep from eating compulsively (especially if it has become habit from earlier dieting experiences away from Atkins), either learned from the book, ADBB or in your experience?

Thanks to Atkins my blood sugars are more stable and I'm rarely REALLY hungry! Still, when I'm bored, I try to find other things to do than eat, because for me, boredom tends to be the worst.

Re: DANDR Reading Group Chapter IV-- "Is This You?&quot

Could you apply some of yourself to each of the three groups Atkins mentions in this chapter(A, B, C), or more than one? If so, where do you find yourself saying, "that's me!"?

Group A: ALWAYS hungry on lowfat / reduced calorie diets, never did much good anyway. Yo-yoing the same 10 pounds over and over just helped me lose motivation to even lose weight at all

Broup B: While not on Atkins, I nibble most of the day, especially ehil studying. I also crave sweets.

Group C: Pasta and breads are the categories of foods that I cannot stop eating if I start.

Which of the three groups he mentions (A, B, C) probably fits you best overall?

        A combination of Groups B and C

Why is 'compulsive eating' a phenomenon known mainly to carbohydrate-filled diets?

Compulsive eating stems from the spike and drop in blood sugar. Eating something sweet (or carb laden) causes my blood sugar to rise very quickly and then plummet. Once my blood sugar drops, I'll stalk around the house (or whereever) just looking for something to eat.

What are some ways you keep from eating compulsively (especially if it has become habit from earlier dieting experiences away from Atkins), either learned from the book, ADBB or in your experience?

While on Atkins, this hasn't been a problem. I don't feel hungry between meals, I even forget that it's meal time until I see someone eating or someone mentions it.

            From Group A:
I know it has always been what I ate rather than how much. Although I did go overboard on the foods that I really liked such as pasta and fruit and bread. Part of my problem was hereditary also. My family rewarded each other with food all the time as well as consulted each other through food. It was the #1 way we said "I love you". I yo-yo dieted my whole life till I got serious and did Atkins last year.

From Group B: YES to all these questions and double yes to the specific health related problems. I never felt good and at to make myself feel better and they symptoms got worse, so I ate more.

From Group C: This would no doubt be coffee. I quit drinking it and missed it everyday. I just started adding it back into my WOE moderately since the beginning of the year.

Which of the three groups he mentions (A, B, C) probably fits you best overall?
            B Group

Why is 'compulsive eating' a phenomenon known mainly to carbohydrate-filled diets?
I'm sure it is because I come from a family full of diabetics. We crave the foods that feed our blood sugar levels. These carb foods lead to constant eating habits that never fully satisfy us. It is a vicious circle that has no ending except to stop the carbs that feed the cycle.

What are some ways you keep from eating compulsively (especially if it has become habit from earlier dieting experiences away from Atkins), either learned from the book, ADBB or in your experience?

I've had to retrain myself that food is not a reward. It is now my necessity to live, but if I am rewarding myself or celebrating happy times, I find things to do rather than eat. I eat less now too cause #1 I drink more water that fills me up before/with/after my meals, #2 Eating less carbs takes away the cravings of high-carb foods and lets me eat smaller portions and healthier. I also have emergency foods available for times when I am weak. I always plan ahead and when I have a back-up to fall to, it is easier.
