  • Bats in the Belfry

    This past Saturday morning (2:15 a.m. to be exact), DH and I were awoken by dog. At first we thought she had to go outside. While DH was getting ready, I saw her in the kitchen, tilting her head up at an angle. I then saw what I thought at first was a bird flying around. When DH came in the room, we both realized that it was a bat.

    He then put on as many lights as he could and finally got the thing locked in a spare bedroom, upstairs.

    He left a message with one animal control place at about 3:00 a.m. When we woke up at about 8:15 a.m., they still hadn't called back. He tried another place, which had someone over within an hour and a half (and the guy was on his day off!!).

    DH went into the room with the guy and it took them about 30-45 minutes to locate the bat, but finally he was caught.

    Funny ...... Well not to you but......

    I was just reading in todays paper that this is the time of year that all the June babies are heading out on their own and that this is very common.

    I had never heard of it before.

    I do suspect they reside in my window shutters on the side of my house though.

      We have them living in the pipe of the woodstove at the cottage. last summer we actually had 4 in the cottage at one time! and take it from me...hiding behind a couch screaming hysterically is not a good plan...they were actually flying towards me!

      When we got up there last wednesday there was a dead bat on the kitchen floor.

      here's a pic of one we caught lst summer, my hubby knocked it down with a broom and knocked it out. it came too but only lived a day or so. the others we've been able to catch with nets and let them go.

      You have my sympathy! they're gross little creatures.

          Oh, one more thing that I forgot. We have double-paned windows in our house. Apparently, the bat hit the window in the guest bathroom upstairs and cracked the inner window. I don't know how we didn't hear that. We have a security system in our house. The upstairs is not wired, but because the window in this particular room over looks the garage roof (which could provide easy access to someone), we have it connected to the security system. I'm surprised that it didn't set it off!!

            When I was a teenager I was staying over at my friend's house who had 4 sisters. It was kinda late but not too late at night and suddenly the girls were screamin' their heads off...we go running into the bedroom they were in and there was this bat freaking flying around in there. It had flown in through the window. Laughing hysterically I told them to get out (I'm the type that gets extremely calm when others panic) and my friend and I chased the bat out with a broom. Poor little guy...they're blind not deaf! Although that one probably suffered some hearing loss from 4 screaming teenage girls!!!! However I really don't care for bats...especially when they're swooping around in the twilight hours hunting for bugs. *shudder*

              I was swooped recently at Belly Dancing class.

              Lemme tell you, 40 screaming women in a dance studio is a sight to behold. And out of all of them? Yep. That sucker picked ME to swoop.

              Just lucky I guess.

              ~~~shiver~~~~ Ewwwwwwwwwwwwww
              Glad ya got it handled, Coop. I.C.K.!!!
              Sadie, it may not be the best plan to hide behind the couch and scream, but rest assured it would have been the plan I'd have put into action too. LOL!
