SACRAMENTO (Wireless Flash) – Potato chip bags may be slapped with another health warning if a suit filed last week by California’s attorney general is successful.
Bill Lockyer is seeking a court order that would require nine food manufactures, including the companies that makes Pringles and Lay’s potato chips, to warn consumers that some of their potato-based products contain acrylamide, a chemical known to cause cancer.
Attorney General Office spokeswoman Teresa Schilling says it’s “hard to say” if the court order making greasy snack lovers aware of the chemical, which was only known to exist in industrial products until a recent study, will be granted or when it would go into effect, but adds, “No matter what, it’s very important for consumers to know what’s in their food.” California is the first state to file such a suit and Schilling figures it’s probably because of California’s strong consumer right-to-know laws.
