Naw, it's not pathetic...it's because you weren't in Mr. Berman's seventh grade world history class and had to memorize the countries. The exam for that was horrific because it was a blank map of Europe with numbers on the countries. You had to identify the country and its capital city. For extra credit, you could name its premier/Prime Minister/President.

I am in England, we don't have "7th" grade. How old are you in "7th grade" 7? or 12?

12 or 13. You're typically 5 or 6 years old in First Grade, depending on the date of birth. My school system had a cut-off: if you were born after October 31 of your birth year, you could not be enrolled into first grade or kindergarden of that same year.

I suppose its a little like how schools are here now. you are in "year 1" when you are 5 and then go all the way through to "year 12" when you are 17.

When I was at school, the years only started when we were at secondary school - 11 onwards. 1st year at 11, 2nd year at 12 etc upto 5th year which was the last year at school. If you stayed on at school for 17 and 18 then this was referred to as lower 6th form and upper 6th form.

Re: Do you know your European Countries (GAME)

Oh so that's what they mean by the "forms". I always wondered about that. The last year of school here is 12th grade, when you graduate and get a high school diploma. I don't know how it is now, but when I was in school, you could leave at the age of 16. I'm not sure if school is mandatory through the 12th grade.

But they've changed the school categories in the years since I was in them. There used to be 3 schools: elementary school (grades kindergarden to 6th grade), junior high school (grades 7-9) and senior high school (10-12). I spent 1 year in "junior high school" at which point it was changed to a "middle school" (grades 7-. Senior high school lost its senority and became plain "high school" housing grades 9-12.

There was also "technical school". When you were 16, you could transfer to a technical school to learn a trade like beautician, car mechanic, plumbing, etc. rather than pursue the "academic" track in high school.

It's hard to imagine that my grandparents went to school (grades 1 through 12) in a one-room school house. Each row of desks represented a different grade and there was one teacher for all grades.

What's the deal with the "levels"?
