  • I can't sleep.

Hubby is snoring away in the bedroom, and here I am, wishing I could sleep. Anyone else an insomniac like me?

I am, It was horrid on Monday, I was up at 1, at 2:30 and at 3:35. I read my book, I listened to the radio, I tossed and turned. And I really needed to sleep cause I had to get up early

      Re: I can't sleep.

I seriously thought about asking my doc for sleeping pills, but then I read a bunch of nightmar-ish stories about people taking sleeping pills and then doing all sorts of horrid things without knowing it. People have ended up in jail for doing things in their sleep. I get myself into enough trouble when I'm conscious of what I'm doing. LOL

I'm still up and just posting posting. I saw that article that just came out in the New England Journal of Medicine (posted in the News & Research forum) and that got me off on a tangent using LexisNexis to look up all sorts of other studies...

            Re: I can't sleep.

I'd kill for 8 hours of straight sleep. i'm oncall 24/7 for part of my job. The pager does go off most nights, usually at least twice (many i have to get up for and work on, call in to meetings etc), sometimes every 20 mins for a couple of hours (probes i can ignore but can't turn off).

For the past year, even when there are no pages, I'm on vacation etc, I CANT sleep all night. my body has become accustomed to waking up now, however my brain hasn't. I'm exhausted at the moment, and it's midnight. but my pager is going off..so whats the point.

OK, my insomnia rant is over. Yawn.

I know the cure for my insomnia .... a new job.

                Re: I can't sleep.

8 hours of sleep, all in a row? What the heck is that? I'm one of those that has no trouble at all getting to sleep. But staying asleep? Never! My average per night is to wake up 5 times, sometimes more. Last nite was horrible I was up checking the time and the temperature about every 45 minutes At least we have a really cool clock that projects the time and outdoor temp on the ceiling - so I have something to watch while I'm laying there awake, it flips back and forth between the time and temp about every 20 seconds. Tic Toc Tic Toc UGH!

                  Re: I can't sleep.

I'm up/down all night everynight. I never sleep more than 4 hours at a time. I don't nap during the day and the doctors were amazed when I was in the hospital. My room with all 3 operations was the midnight 'party room'. The nurses and staff took their breaks in my room. The doctor gave me some sleeping pills but I elected not to take them. I have never been a sleeper...but it doesn't seem to bother me. I know they say your supposed to get 8 hours a day, but his has been my habit since childhood --

I have a really hard time falling asleep. I have even a harder time waking up in the morning. I hit the snooze, over and over. I used to be a very sound sleeper, but now my sleep is light and restless, and I don't even drink coffee anymore! It's starting to really get to me. I slept about 4 hours last night. Ugh!.

the snooze button is an evil invention. i actually set my alarm 45 mins ealier than i need to so that i can keep hitting it. if i set my clock right, i'd be 45 mins late. and my clock is 1 hour and 10 mins fast as well. drives my hubby nuts. he has to have his own clock on his side of the bed, mine confuses him

                        Re: I can't sleep.

We used to do that Jen. But then I got John one of those clocks that automatically sets the time so we can't do that anymore. If you set it ahead, it will correct itself! John has to get up at 5am now, so he wakes me up at 6:15 and I don't have to worry about any annoying alarm clock! It always seems that I'm finally sleeping my best from about 4 am on.

                              Re: I can't sleep.

There hasn't been a single night I can remember in years that I slept straight through till morning. But there were quite a few occasions over the years that I didn't go to bed until 4am, then slept until noon the next day!

If I'm not asleep during the time period 4-5 am-ish, after being up all night, I tend to get my days mixed up.
