let's discuss books that we are reading, have read, or would like to read. since i'm a book addict myself , i'll rattle off a few titles i've absorbed in the recent past and present.
    ***************************************

Nine Parts of Desire - by Geraldine Brooks. excellent review of women living in modern islamic countries.

Dombey and Son - by Charles Disckens. this has usurped Tale of Two Cities as my fave Dickens, yes, i said it. read it now!

The Golden Notebook - by Doris Lessing. must be good since it won the nobel prize for lit, right? WRONG. this book sucked so bad i ditched it after the second half.

A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseine. you will not be able to stop reading this. if you loved The Kite Runner (and who didn't??) you will adore this one.

Evolution for Everyone - by David Sloan Wilson. meh. it was ok, but if you have a biology background, you might find it a bit too pedantic.

The Thirteenth Tale - by Diane Setterfield. a lovely gothic mystery complete with estates, thunderstorms, fires, twins, and a batty recluse. very good first novel.

1984 - by George Orwell. this was great and i should have read it in high school rather than pass notes.

The Appeal - by John Grisham. this is classic formulaic Grisham, but it will still make your blood boil.

    Right now I'm reading:

Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk. It's really vivid and somewhat disgusting. But I LOVE Palahniuk!

    I recently re-read:

Lolita by Vladmir Nabokov. I really love this book--it used to be my favorite book when I was 16 (probably because I really liked older men, creepy I know) and when I just read it again this summer, I was supremely disturbed by it.

A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'Engle. I read this to my summer school students, and they were hooked. I'm not much of a sci-fi/fantasy fan, but this book is excellent. (As are the sequels.)

I'm in the middle of (and never seeming to finish):

Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie. I LOVE the way he writes, subtle humor, and so artistic with words.

Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace. He sort of reminds me of Vonnegut, in this crazy sponsored/subsidized world of the future he's concocted.

jules, i have never read anything by palahniuk. should i start? i went throught his period where i read alot of the russian authors. i did read lolita and ada. both were excellent.

have you read Enchantress of Florence yet? it's on deck for me. i'm also a rishdie fan.

also, forgot to mention that i recently read The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. an interesting peek into the communist takeover of the czech republic in the late 60's and a survey of the hopelessness of it all.

Yes, DEFINITELY pick up some Palahniuk! You could start with Fight Club, which is actually the "tamest" of his novels. Let's see, I also loved Choke and Invisible Monsters.

He sort of reminds me of an extreme Tom Robbins. Which reminds me that Even Cowgirls Get the Blues is like, one of the best books I've ever read.

                Re: Now Reading

Hey - great thread! I love books.

I have always intended to read Fight Club, but not got round to it yet.

I love Dickens, but eke them out. I really like Barnaby Rudge, which doesn't tend to be very popular. I've got his Christmas Stories (more than just A Christmas Carol) put by for exciting pre-Christmas reading.

I have to say Lulubell, I didn't enjoy The Kite Runner. I don't like the way he writes, but loads of people seem to really like it, so fair play to him.

If you liked 1984 you may like Fahrenheit 451 by Raymond Bradbury. I read it for my (fab) book group and really liked it, though not my usual thing.

Midnight's Children is our book for November, so I am looking forward to that. We will also be reading Money by Martin Amis and Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson.

Talking of The Unbearable Lightness of Being - I think I have read most of his books. I went through a big obsession during my 18th year . I really liked his The Joke.

I am currently reading The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins, which is pretty good, but not as good as Dickens.

Right now I am reading "Jack & Jill" by James Patterson.

I recently finished "The Next Accident" by Lisa Gardner.

Then there's my all time favorites by Janet Evonavich, Mary Higgins Clark, Patricia Cornwell. I could go on and on

I'm working on The Moon and Sixpence by W. Somerset Maugham.
                    And it's absolutely amazing.
