If there are specific programs you need to have access to, a tablet PC may be more what you are looking for. Some have attachable or swivel out of the way keyboards, which would make text entry easier and faster, but yet still allow for written notes. Their underlying OS is often a full blown Windows, which makes software compatibility a snap. It is a bit heavier than a Pocket PC though. If you are going that route, I can really recommend the
Axim x50. It has a compact slot and SD, and should service your needs well with the addition of a Bluetooth keyboard when you need to type.

Check out these links nurselady. I have an IPAQ and I love it. I do everything on it! I would stick with the pocket PC (IPAQ or Dell...) rather then a PALM. As far as dropping it, they sell heavy duty cases that will protect then.

If it has to be in your pocket you pretty much have your answer, Pocket PC. You will have the most application available for that rather than the Palm/Handspring environment. Either the Ipaq (HP) or the Axim (Dell) will work well for you. You will definitely want Bluetooth (and possibly WiFi) built into the PDA for ease of accessorizing.

As for drop resistant cases, here is one that came recommended to me:
