Happy anniversary all ...
I cant believe it has been 3 years now ...
I can remember the day that I created the board, and the events that lead up to this ...
It was one of those times when things look like the end of the world. Someone else was archiving my mailing lists for my big atkins mailing list and the added a bulletin board. They were then kind of using the people from my mailing list to go over to the bulleting board and eventually cut out all of the links to the site and mailing list and kind of backstabbed our partnership.
I decided at that point to just start up my own bulletin board. I went out and got the software ... played around with it a bit and started it up on my home server. I didnt think much of it at the time and to be honest the mailing list was booming and never thought it would be anywhere near as big as the list.
I put it up and went on the mailing list and found some people to help out. ( wont mention names here as not to leave anyone out but you can check the membership list for the early joiners ) and before I knew it the thing was up and bustling. It grew unbelievably fast .... bam ...
my home server was spinning ... there were outages and out of memory stuff and downtimes and being up all night ...
And I was dealing with this among my regular work and family life. Lets just say it was hectic and a loyal group of people really helped get this board to the place it was.
Things got worse ... the server was underpowered and we needed major upgrades just to keep up with the new members.
We had the whole board split fiasco ... and looking back I thank that it actually happened as it was a good kick in my butt to get things in order and take things more seriously.
I updgraded and moved over to data center and dedicated machine.
We got hacked a few times ... but through all of this the board grew and information was shared and people made close friendships and I think we all learned a bit more about dieting and all found as we have a home ...
This board is more to me than a diet discussion board. It is a bunch of friends that are always there. I can come on at 4:00 AM and there will be people hear to discuss things with.
I have special relationships with people on this board and my only regret is that as the board got bigger the responsibilities that I have for the board do not allow me to get close to you all and to post out in the open as much as I would like.
Well that was 3 years to now ...
and look at us ... this board through the success of you all has attracted millions of viewers from all over the world. We have thousands of registered users and posters and as you can see we usually have over 30 registered users on at all times and it is not that rare to see 70 registered users and 200 guests on during peak hours.
I would like to thank all of you who have donated time and energy and money to keep the board going.
I tried to make this board and the others that I run ( <plug > http://www.dietaatkins.com http://www.lowcarbbulletinboard.com http://sbdbb.com </plug> ) the ideas of the current people on the board. So the persona of the board now should be a representation of those who are here and posting and adding their ideas and for that I feel we are better than the rest.
Again to look back ... when we were small ... we used to do all board changes by vote ... do any of you remember that ... it used to be a true democracy ... but we got too big for that and there were a few arguments but I think we still have that democratic feel and idealism.
Well as all who know me I am known for my rambling and here i think I rambled enough. I just want to thank all of you for putting into this board all that you have. This is your board!!! Be proud of what YOU have created. And for the next three years its direction is directly related to what you do with it.
Regards,
Tom
