Re: Ever get tired of defending Atkins?

In my family my brother is on Atkins for life because he has an auto immune illness which is being contolled by this diet. His young wife joined him out of loyalty but now she loves it herself.
My father has always eaten Atkins style all the years of his life, 80 plus years, he just naturally eats fat and protein and some veggies and he is still playing tennis to this day.

My brother-in-law is also on this diet just because he likes to be on something effective.

I have two colleagues that are on and off the official Atkins diet. Still, I get a lot of apprehension by people about being on Atkins.

So I start off telling them I am on a diet for me. I mention what I eat in a typical day and how well I feel. I also have a lot of energy. THEN I tell them I am on Atkins. By then, people are not ready to argue about it much.

I believe in advocating for the diet because I do believe in it. I also accept that those people are really afraid of it, heck, some people at this board say they are afraid initially. I try to accept, but also, rebute their fears. I believe in sharing a good thing.....

WTG Betty. It has taken me a long time but I try to never ever feel "I have to justify myself" on anything to anyone. Can be a bit selfish and hard on others sometimes, even confusing, but I am into total self survival on this WOL, because the other choice has too many consequences which in the end affect those I love.

lol I've thought about that too but could never think of a way it wouldn't turn out badly. I imagine me tapping them on the shoulder saying "Excuse me, but 6 months ago I was extremely obese, now, thanks to the Atkins way of life I've lost over 80 pounds. I'd like to share my experiences so you could be healthier too".

As I walk away with a black eye I'd think "Maybe I should just hand out a pamphlet and run".

SO SO true. this angers me too! my mom is one of the worst culprits about this sort of thing with me. and she's over 250 pounds herself on a 5' 4" frame, personally i think it might be some sort of inner jealousy thing going on. but she sees me eating and she says stuff like 'YOURE EATING AGAIN!? god you eat so much! you're gonna be 300 pounds the way you eat!" and i simply tell her "it's not how much i eat, it's WHAT i eat" you know? because she eats very little actually, but she eats the WORST possible stuff, icecream, potato chips, tons and tons of white bread. and i'm sitting there on my 3rd salad of the day and she thinks i'm a major pig. haha. well. and i've definitely had people tell me "YOURE GONNA GIVE YOURSELF a HEART ATTACK WITH THAT ATKINS STUFF!" and i'm like "guys... it's not like i'm going out and downing tubs of butter and chicken fat or something!"
i'm too proud of what i've done so far to let anything stand in the way of that, least of all some misinformed folks.
to my surprise, after i read the correct way of going about atkins. it's really VERY healthy, almost akin to how our ancestors ate before the 20th century. it's the only way i ever want to eat again! no additives or carcinogens, it's way natural. i have to say it's probably akin to veganism with meat (and sour cream and cheese and butter haha)! if that makes any sense haha. but yeah.
i feel you on this so much! thanks for letting me air my frustrations about that too!

Re: Ever get tired of defending Atkins?

When I first started the plan, I was incredibly apprehensive about telling anyone that it was Atkins. When people started noticing, I simply said, "I exercise regularly, drink water, and eat healthier foods." When compliments started rolling in after I'd lost 50 pounds or so, I'd expand my explanation and say, "I eat whole, unprocessed foods and NO junk food, I drink water, I exercise regularly." Now, after losing 80+ pounds, and gaining the respect of my friends, family, and co-workers for my healthy habits, I proudly say "I follow Atkins."

I look at it in a different way. I love to tell people the real truth about Atkins. I do it with the facts that I have learned on ADBB, as well as with my own personal results.

Re: Ever get tired of defending Atkins?

I'm thankful I live somewhere where I don't get much anti Atkins flak. Italians don't really know much about low carbing and are not prejudiced against it. More often than not they're interested to hear how, usually, one's BP, blood sugar and cholesterol numbers improve dramatically when eating this way.

Can't sway them from their beloved pasta though! Lol.

I'm a big supporter. I know what flour and sugar does to me. You can't tell me it's not healthier to eat this way.
